Excerpt from The Orphan Family, or Principle and Practice: A Moral Tale Mr. Forsyth was a merchant, who lived in the city of Exeter. He had been a widower for a few years, and had endeavoured to discharge faithfully a parent's duty to five young children, when he too was taken away from those who depended upon him, and whose very existence seemed bound up in his. He was taken from them, and no one knew what would become of these young helpless creatures, who, it was thought, would inherit from their father nothing but his good name, and who possessed nothing but the good principles and industrious habits which his care and affection had imparted to them. They had no near relations, and the friends, whom their parents' respectability had gained for them, had families of their own to support, and could offer little but advice and friendly offices: large pecuniary assistance they had it not in their power to impart. One of these friends, who was also Mr. Forsyth's exe cator, took the children into his house till the fu neral should be over and some plans arranged for the future disposal of each of them. Excerpt from The Orphan But tradition was strongly questioned as to his mother, for how could the son of such a mother be possessed of the dare-devil courage and grit which had made his name a synonym of terror? This contention was well stated and is borne out, for it can be authoritatively said that the mother of The Orphan was white, and had neither Indian nor negro blood in her veins, but on the contrary came from a family of gentlefolk. Thus I start aright by refuting slander. The Orphan was white, his profanity blue, and his anger red, and having started aright, I will continue with the events which led to the discovery of his innate better qualities and their final ascendency over the savagely hard nature which circumstances had bred in him. These events began on the day when James Shields, for reasons hereinafter set forth, became actively interested in his career. Excerpt from Orphans of the Storm In all the countryside of Evreux, nay in all the beauteous old-time Normandy of the period of 1789, there were no lovelier files du peuple than Henriette and Louise Girard. Their romantic story was often whispered by country gossips. In infancy foundlings on the church steps of Notre Dame, then brought to this quiet Norman backwater by the Girards and raised as sisters, they had lost both their protectors by death. The same visitation of the dread plague had cost poor little Louise her eyesight. Since the orphaning and especially since the blindness of Louise, Henriette cared for her with a love overwhelming as that of a mother for her helpless baby. Excerpt from Orphan Dinah In this hour, after noon on a day of mid September, the light was changing, not gradually at the sun's proper declension, but under the forces of a south-west wind bringing up vapour at twenty miles an hour from the distant sea. From the rounded and weathered masses of the Beacon, the hill s10ped abruptly and a receding foreground of dying fern and grey, granite boulders broke on a gap of such extent that earth, reappearing far below, was already washed by the milky azure of the air, through which It glimmered and receded and presently again rose to lofty lands beyond. The ground plan was a mighty cup, over which the valley undulated, rising here to knap and knoll, falling there into coombs and plains, sinking to its lowest depths immediately beneath the View point, where Dart wound about lesser hills, not small in themselves, yet dwarfed by the greatness of the expanse and the loftiness of the horizon's brim. Upon that distant and irregular line, now melting into the thick air, border heights and saliencies sank and rose, repeating on a vaster scale the anatomy of the river basin. They lifted through the hazes until they faded Upon the sight into the gathering Clouds, that loomed still full of light, above their grey confines. The sea was long since hidden. A chief quality of this Spectacle appeared in the three dis similar and different coverings that draped it. The body of the earth lay wrapped in a triple robe, and each garment was slashed and broken, so that its texture fiowed into and revealed the others. Every furlong of these rolling leagues, save only where the river Iooped and twined through the middle distance, was clad with forest, with field, or with wilderness of heath and stone; and all, preserving their Special qualities, added character of contrast to their neighbours. There was not a monotonous passage from east to west in this huge Spectacle. Tilth and meadow. Oozed out through Coppice and hanger. Excerpt from The Two Orphans: With Scenes From the Play The dusty diligence which rolled over the hard road from Evreux to Paris, on a certain warm summer's day. In the year 18 contained but two passengers, and they, young girls. As they sat on the hard leathern seats, weary from the effects of the long ride, which would cause more mature persons to look jaded, one can see that, so engrossed are they with the thoughts of their arrival in Paris, they have forgotten the discomforts of their reception.
