Following in the footsteps of Robeson, Ali, Robinson and others, today’s Black athletes re-engage with social issues and the meaning of American patriotism Named a best book of 2018 by Library Journal It used to be that politics and sports were as separate from one another as church and state. The ballfield was an escape from the world’s worst problems, top athletes were treated like heroes, and cheering for the home team was as easy and innocent as hot dogs and beer. “No news on the sports page” was a governing principle in newsrooms. That was then. Today, sports arenas have been transformed into staging grounds for American patriotism and the hero worship of law enforcement. Teams wear camouflage jerseys to honor those who serve; police officers throw out first pitches; soldiers surprise their families with homecomings at halftime. Sports and politics are decidedly entwined. But as journalist Howard Bryant reveals, this has always been more complicated for black athletes, who from the start, were committing a political act simply by being on the field. In fact, among all black employees in twentieth-century America, perhaps no other group had more outsized influence and power than ballplayers. The immense social responsibilities that came with the role is part of the black athletic heritage. It is a heritage built by the influence of the superstardom and radical politics of Paul Robeson, Jackie Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Tommie Smith, and John Carlos through the 1960s; undermined by apolitical, corporate-friendly “transcenders of race,” O. J. Simpson, Michael Jordan, and Tiger Woods in the following decades; and reclaimed today by the likes of LeBron James, Colin Kaepernick, and Carmelo Anthony. The Heritage is the story of the rise, fall, and fervent return of the athlete-activist. Through deep research and interviews with some of sports’ best-known stars—including Kaepernick, David Ortiz, Charles Barkley, and Chris Webber—as well as members of law enforcement and the military, Bryant details the collision of post-9/11 sports in America and the politically engaged post-Ferguson black athlete.

The perfect gift or coffee table piece, this second volume of The Heritage Golf Reader set presents a wide ranging sampling of verse, short stories, memorable quotes, and jokes about the beloved (and cursed!) game. Many famous writers are represented, includ-ing the creator of Winnie the Pooh, A.A. Milne, "An Inland Voyage." The identity of many is unknown. Other stories presented in this second volume of this set are two stories by P. G. Wodehouse, "The Heel of Achilles," and "A Mixed Threesome"; John Campbell Haywood's "The Way of Some," Harry Irving Shumway's "The Greatest Duffer I Ever Knew," A. W. Tillinghast's "A Woman's Way," "The Letter of the Law" by Theodore Banks, and two by the prolific Gerald Batchelor, "The Major's Bogey," and "Local Rules." Poetry includes "A Wonderful Score" by the West Point graduate General Walter N. P. Darrow and "The Conundrum of the Links" by the legendary sportswriter Grantland Rice. Among fifty seven poems there is one of unknown author-ship that was inspired by Rudyard Kipling's "If," as well as poems inspired by Edgar Allan Poe, "The Ravin' of a Golf Maniac," and R. M. Milnes (Lord Houghton), "Duffers Yet." One nonfiction article proves that many issues abide quite a while, as some of the issues discussed today were discussed by Horace Hutchinson (British Amateur Champion 1886, 1887) in 1903's "The Success of the Wom-an Golfer." There are several contributions by golfer/writers better known for their accomplishments in other fields. These include the course designer A. W. Tillinghast and the playwright and Episcopalian minister William Gil-bert van Tassel Sutphen who named the nineteenth hole, and the man who introduced the curveball to college baseball (Clinton Scollard). Memorable observations include those by the writers H. G. Wells, Harper Lee, John Up-dike and the creator of James Bond, Ian Fleming. Memorable quotes from two philosophers, humorists Will Rogers and H. L. Mencken are included. Presidential observations from Woodrow Wilson and Gerald Ford are also included. Finally also are the ideas of the great one, Bobby Jones.

This volume deals with policy, methods and techniques for the stewardship of our land and our cultural assets. The focus is on interpretation and presentation of heritage themes, and the papers should be of interest to those concerned with school and university curricula, those working in museums and galleries, and those in charge of parks and tourist enterprises. Individual contributions celebrate achievements and debate issues relating to the natural and built environment, the future of green tourism, planning and interpretation in museums, parks and private estates. The authors include: Professor David Lowenthal on cultural landscapes; Charles McKean on architecture; David Macmillan on the arts; John Purser on music; Elisabeth Luard on cooking; the Earl of Glasgow on the opening of a family estate to the public; and Gordon Baxter on the heritage of one of Scotland's great enterprise stories in the food industry. The main theme of the book is that we do not always take enough pride in our heritage which is often undervalued and neglected. Positive action is required to raise awareness, to foster respect for our inheritance and to generate a new kind of enterprise that will not endanger the heritage resources on which we depend for enjoyment and jobs.

Sport is an integral part of British culture and an important aspect of modern life, but although its importance has been recognised in academic history, in the growing and related fields of heritage and museum studies it has yet to be fully appreciated and brought into interaction More...with historical studies. Ideologically, sport and heritage both convey powerful messages, responsible for shaping our understanding of sport, history, and the past; although they have essentially operated as separate spheres, one important aspect of convergence between them is seen in the rise and popularity of sports museums, the collecting of sporting art and memorabilia, and popular concern over the demise of historic sports buildings and places. The essays in this volume look at sports history as manifested in academic enquiry, museum exhibition and heritage sites. They deal among other things with the public representation of sport and why it matters; its impact on public spheres; the direction of sports heritage studies and what they should be attempting to achieve; the role of museums in public history; and the place, memory and meaning in the historic sports landscape.
