Excerpt from The Herring: Its Effect on the History of Britain No one who studies national economics of past centuries can fail to be impressed by evi deuces of the close connection between the foreign policy of England and her national trade interest, though during the nineteenth century that connection was growing looser, and, in the two or three decades just before this war, had begun to disappear. Wool and herring in the period covered by the twelfth to the seventeenth centuries were what would now be called key industries. It was on them our national policy may be said to have largely turned whenever the rulers of England entered upon discussions, peaceful or warlike, with other nations. Further, our political action, whether in respect of domestic or foreign policy, was silently but ultimately based upon that national system of economics which was for the most part represented by the words wool and herring. Wherever you fit into the debate about food - vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, flexitarian, or carnivore - you cannot argue against the fact that fish have influenced our diet for millennia, and, for many, continue to do so today. We are, after all, an island nation surrounded by seas that were once extremely rich and diverse in its variety of both fish and shellfish, and it’s well known that early man was as much a hunter-gatherer on water as on land for fish are a great supplier of protein. Yet only in the last couple of centuries has fishing become an established occupation, and the last forty years has seen a multitude of change in what is now an industry. Outside the industry, little has been written about how this seafood is caught, landed and then reaches us, the consumer. We all know about fish and chip shops, but do we know the difference between a beam and otter trawl? What is the difference between a lobster pot and a lobster creel? Did you know oysters and salmon were once caught in such huge amounts they were regarded as poor man’s food? We all like ambling around colorful fishing harbors gazing at the boats, but just how much do we know about those that go out in such a dangerous environment and bring back the catch? With fish much talked about in today’s news, alongside the unhealthy state of the oceans, here we have the definitive guide to Britain’s commercial fisheries.

Though tiny, the herring has played an enormous role in history. Battles have been waged over it. International economic alliances have formed over it. Major cities owe their prosperity to it. Political powers have risen and fallen with herring’s own rise and fall in population. How can this all be attributed to this unassuming little animal? In Herring: A Global History, Kathy Hunt looks at the environmental, historical, political, and culinary background of this prolific and easily caught fish. Over the centuries, herring have sustained populations in times of war and hardship, and the fish’s rich flavor, delicate texture, and nutritious meat have made it a culinary favorite. Its ease of preparation—just grill, broil, fry, pickle, salt, or smoke and serve—have won it further acclaim. Engaging and informative, the book features fifteen mouth-watering recipes. It will appeal to food lovers, history buffs, and anyone who has ever enjoyed a British kipper, German Bismarck, Dutch matjes, or Jewish chopped-herring.

For centuries Britain's commercial fishermen have ventured out into the ravages of the surrounding seas to bring fish back both to supply a home market and for export around the world. Fishing is one of history's most dangerous jobs, and when disasters occur they can affect whole communities: in 1872 some 129 men were lost in one night alone. Fishermen have lost their lives because of extreme weather, fishing gear entanglement, lack of emergency support and often simply by falling overboard. Today, commercial fishing remains one of the most perilous occupations and still claims the lives of fishermen each year, leaving their families behind. The Perilous Catch is a well-researched, comprehensive and poignant history of the fishing industry written by maritime historian Mike Smylie.

This book examines the environmental, political, and economic history of Ireland's marine fisheries from 1400 to 1600. It combines a wide range of historical sources with innovative digital research methods to provide a comprehensive and systematic overview. Government letters and court documents highlight the diverse range of fishing fleets from across Europe that visited Irish waters in the early sixteenth century, bringing wealth and cultural influence to the native Irish, who developed complex systems to protect and tax the visitors. Furthermore, trade records illustrate that fish was Ireland's premier export in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. However, a range of factors led to the industry's collapse by the end of the sixteenth century: the Tudor conquest which disrupted fishing operations and fundamentally altered who controlled fishing resources; the destabilization of Irish waters resulting from the terrestrial conflict, which allowed pirates to thrive; an influx of cheap cod from the newly exploited fisheries in Newfoundland which changed consumption patterns in Ireland and across Europe; and shifting climatic conditions and decades of over-exploitation which meant fewer fish and poorer catches. Overall, the book reveals that fisheries form a vital part of the broader environmental, political, and economic history of Ireland.
