Excerpt from The Historical Criticism of Documents External Criticism is complete. It remains by means of Internal Criticism to decide the value of the evidence contained in the source, to interpret the latter, and by means of this evidence establish the historical facts of which we are in search. These facts are then grouped, gaps are filled in by construo tive reasoning, and the whole is presented in such a form as to render intelligible the process and facts of historical development. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from Biblical Criticism and Modern Thought: Or the Place of the Old Testament Documents in the Life of to-Day The author of the present volume was appointed to the Chancellor's Lectureship of Queen's University in 1906 and 1907, and delivered to the Theological Alumni Association the nine lectures which form the substance of the book. Chapter I., which now serves as an Introduction, appeared in 1901 as an article in The Biblical World (Chicago), and is reproduced by permission; Chapter XI. was read before The Philosophical Society of Queen's University in the autumn of 1906; the remaining three chapters, X., XIII., and XIV., were added to round out a little more the programme that the author had in mind. So much as to the origin of the book, now as to its plan and purpose. The title, though perhaps somewhat too general, indicates the spirit in which the work was undertaken. Considering the audience to which, in the first place, the lectures were to be addressed, it was thought advisable to attempt a general review of the Old Testament Problem. Excerpt from The Higher Criticism: Four Papers Asserted that even the most generally accepted con clusions of the Higher Criticism are contradicted by archaeology: but our readers must rest assured that this is not the case: such statements rest uniformly upon some misapprehension either of the grounds upon which critics rest their conclusions, or of the bearing of the facts of archaeology upon them.* It need only be added, lastly, that in what has been said, both in this Preface and in the papers which follow, -except in one or two places where the contrary will be self-evident, - the Old Testament alone has been held in view. With regard to the New Testament, it may be sufficient to observe that, as has been pointed out below (p. The very different conditions under which the writings of the New Testament were produced, and especially the relatively short interval of time separating them from the period of our Lord's life upon earth, make it to our minds impossible that the application to it of the methods of the Higher Criticism (in the legitimate sense of the expression), though it may alter our view of the origin and strue ture of some of the documents concerned, should ever affect appreciably the historical evidence for all the leading facts of our Lord's life, or for the vital truths of Christianity. Excerpt from Criticism on the Declaration of Independence, as a Literary Document As it may be said of the Declaration, that it accomplished the purposes for which it was designed, all unfavorable observations are as supererogatory, as were the sinister reflections of Buonaparte on the disposition of the British forces at Waterloo - a triumphant reply to all which consisted in the brief assertion of the respon dants, we beat you. So it may be rejoined with like propriety; for as much as it was the end to be attained, and not the means to attain that end which became important on the day of that event ful battle; it is true, neither the glmy of the victory is diminished, or the consolations of the vanquished increased, by the imperfect tion of the means used. But so far as an analogy exists in the two cases, it bears on the political aim and sequences of the Declaration of Independence; upon which topic I do not pro pose at present to remark. Its literary merits and demerits are a different, and as I think, a fair subject of critical examination. To this aspect, and to this alone, do I invite the attention of all those Whose curiosity or peculiarities lead them to make a dis tinction between what is good and bad, proper and improper. Excerpt from The Historical New Testament: Being the Literature of the New Testament Arranged in the Order of Its Literary Growth and According to the Dates of the Documents Apart from the translation, the main feature of originality within these pages consists of the leading idea which domin ates the volume, and of the way in which this idea has been executed. The critical materials constitute what either are or ought to be more or less familiar positions upon the lines of modern NT research but they are grouped under a scheme which, so far as I am aware, is quite unique.1 Briefly put, the design is to arrange that selection of early Christian literature which is known as the New Testament in the order of its literary growth, and at the same time to indicate the chief grounds upon which such an order may be deter mined or disputed. This aim, with its difficulties, utility, and limitations, I have discussed in the Prolegomena. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
