Not illustrated. 1894 edition. Excerpt: ...votes, gave notice of a motion to reconsider in order that the question might be fairly tested in a full vote of the House. On the next day, February 13,1821, Mr. Livermore made his motion for reconsideration. Some of the friends of Missouri opposed the motion for reconsideration, partly because they would not have Missouri burdened with any conditions whatever, holding that she was only kept out of the Union by violence and injustice; partly because, as in the case of Mr. Randolph, of Virginia, they held that the battle had been fairly fought and won by the other side, and that another way must be found to settle this question. Mr. Clay made a successful plea for reconsideration, and again the House plunged into a heated debate. At this stage of the controversy Mr. Pinckney, of South Carolina, made a notable speech. He considered that the country "had now arrived at the most awful period which had hitherto occured on this delicate and distressing subject." He quoted from a letter cf Jefferson, lately published, indicating the portentous character of the Missouri question. 'I agree perfectly with him, ' said Mr. Pinckney, "and J consider this, beyond all comparison, the second question in importance which has been agitated among us since our revolt from the parent State. The first was the memorable declaration which confirmed the Union and gave birth to the independence of our country. This is the only one which may, in its consequences, lead to the dissolution of that very Union, and prove the deathblow to all our political happiness and national importance. I express this fear from the fact that gentlemen of the opposition have seen fit to throw off the veil and expressly declare their intention to leave this question to...

Excerpt from The Missouri Compromise: An Historical Study for Eighth Grade Pupils As a preparation for a study of the Missouri Compromise, a short review of the condition of our country at the time of that famous struggle may not be amiss. The growth in different lines between 1776 and 1820 had been most marked. At the close of the Revolution our treaty with England gave us an area of square miles, bounded on the north by Canada and the Great Lakes, on the west by the Mississippi, on the south by the Spanish provinces of Florida and West Florida, and on the east by the Atlantic; by 1820 we had increased this area to square miles, with Canada and the Great Lakes on the north, Mexico and the Rockies on the west, Mexico and the Gulf on the south, and the Atlantic on the east. Florida was not actually in our possession, but the treaty of purchase was awaiting ratification by the Spanish government and there was no doubt but that the formal transfer would be made. In addition to this extended terri tory the work of the explorers, Gray, Lewis and Clark, and the settlement of Astoria by the Pacific Fur Company, had given us good grounds for claim ing the rich region known as the Oregon Country. Excerpt from The Missouri Compromise: An Address Delivered Before the Citizens of Pittsfield This is a crisis, in which we who love our country and bear the sacred office, must speak and will Speak. If we should hold our peace, the stones would immediately cry out. If you could poll, the whole ministry of the free States to-day, you would not find one in a hundred, but that would remon strate at the top of their voices against the repeal of the Missouri compromise, which declares that from all the territory purchased of France, lying north of 36 deg. 30 min, slavery and involuntary servitude, otherwise than in the punishment of crimes, shall be, and is hereby forever prohibited. In Speaking to you tonight, I do not. Claim, with Elihu, to be quite full of the matter, but I am so near full, that I cannot hold my peace. Though I have now been in the ministry almost fifty years, I have never seen the time, but once, (i allude to the violent expulsion of the Indians, ) when the faith, and honor, and justice of the nation were so much in. Danger of being tarnished, as since the Opening of this Congress. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Relation of Philip Phillips to the Repeal of the Missouri Compromise in 1854 The first attempt publicly to bring about the repeal of the Missouri compromise by the introduction of an amendment to that effect into the language of the Nebraska bill was made by a southern whig, Senator Archibald Dixon, a Kentucky slaveholder. Brought to the attention of the senate on Monday, January 16, the Dixon amendment was designed to be the concluding section section 22 of the bill in its then existent form. The amend ment called for the withdrawal of the eighth section of the old Missouri act of 1820 from application to the Nebraska territory and permitted citizens of all states and territories to take and hold their slaves within any of the territories of the United States, or of the States to be formed therefrom, as if the said act had never been passed. That the injection of the Dixon amendment into the situation greatly disturbed Douglas there is good ground for believing.12 But that the incident prob ably tended toward quickening the process of reshaping the bill of January 4 is likewise clear.
