Excerpt from A History of California: The American Period As the title indicates, this volume deals with the American period of California history. It thus aims to complement the work of Dr. Charles E. Chapman, whose History of California: the Spanish Period, has already made its welcome appearance from the press. As the preface to this latter volume states, the general plan of the two books was agreed upon as far back as 1914. Since that date, Dr. Chapman and the writer "have been in constant communication, but otherwise working independently, with the view to producing between them, an authoritative popular history of California." With the exception of a slight overlapping of the writer's opening chapters with the closing pages of Dr. Chapman's narrative (an overlapping, however, which has involved almost no actual repetition of incident), each book covers a separate field. Yet the keynote of the two volumes is essentially the same, namely, that California history is vastly more significant because of its national and international aspects than for any local interest it may possess. From this standpoint, the event of primary importance in the history of California is its transformation from a Mexican province into an American state. To this event, as Dr. Chapman shows, the Spanish period looks forward; from this event, dates the California of today and the greater California of tomorrow. In preparing this volume for the press, the writer has had in mind three objects - to make his book conform to the canons of sound scholarship; to escape a provincial and localized point of view; and to avoid being classed with those "who write for nothing so irrelevant as a reader." Excerpt from A History of the College of California The history of the College of California is an important chapter in the educational history of the State. As such it deserves a permanent record, which it has not hitherto had. It deserves it all the more, because it belongs to the earliest period of that history, and if unwritten would be forgotten. Inasmuch as I was Secretary of the Board of Trustees from the beginning, and the executive officer of the College for eight years, the duty of writing this history seemed to fall to me. Perhaps I am the only one who could write it with so full a recollection of the facts. Besides, . I have carefully preserved the materials necessary to its composition, such as the record of the transactions of the Board of Trustees, the Treasurers books, the correspondence of the College, its annual catalogues and occasional circulars, the reports of the Faculty of Instruction, also copies of printed addresses, orations, poems. Alumni proceedings, reports, etc. These materials I have freely used, guided by my own recollection of events as they took place. It has been my purpose, not only to give a correct view of the progress of the institution in a general way, but also a clear idea of its grade of scholarship, and of its principles and aims, both educational and religious. At the same time I have made it to represent quite fully the literature which grew up within the College and around it, giving in full most of its publications. Excerpt from A History of California: The Spanish Period This is the third volume of the writer which is the direct result of his enjoyment during two years of a Native Sons of the Golden West Traveling Fellowship, which enabled him to make researches in Spain. The writer's first thought, therefore, in publishing this volume is to express his gratitude to the patriotic Californian order which has made it possible. The other two works by the writer on the history of California were directed primarily to the history profession; one (The Founding of Spanish California) was an intensively documented monograph, and the other (Catalogue of Materials in the Archivo General de Indias) a technical manuscript guide. These two he is endeavoring in the present work to bring to their logical conclusion - the ultimate aim, indeed, of all historical scholarship - by publishing what he hopes may be accepted as an authoritative popular history. Since it is intended for the general public, this volume omits much of the professional paraphernalia, and does not hesitate to give space to interesting incident. As to its authoritativeness it is at any rate the product of thirteen years' investigation of Spanish Californian history, involving the use of thousands of hitherto unknown manuscripts, as well as important printed materials not previously digested or assimilated. Two outstanding reasons exist for the publication of this volume. In the first place, it presents a vast amount of new material, some portions of which have never before appeared in print, while others were not known, or not utilized, by the general historians of the state.
