Kanagawa Prefecture, which is located in the southern Kantō region of Japan, is part of the Greater Tokyo Area, and became the place where Western civilization flowed into Japan after the Treaty of Kanagawa was signed on March 31, 1854. American and western European industrialized countries experiencing rapid industrialization in the 18th century sought new markets for raw materials and for the acquisition and sale of goods. They both looked towards Japan, but the Shogunate refused their entreaties and continued practicing the isolation system. Eventually, threatened by military pressure from the American government, led by Commodore Matthew Perry, the Kanagawa Shogunate succumbed and the two sides signed the treaty, leading the Kanagawa Prefecture to be known as "The Gateway to Japan." This book, compiled and published by the Kanagawa Prefecture Government in March of 1956, contains a series of articles focusing on the resonstruction of "The Gateway to Japan," and on the rehabilitation of its proud people, ravaged by the Pacific War, the Great Kanto Earthquake, and a series of natural disasters. After Japan's surrender in 1945, General Douglas MacArthur, the chief commander of Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers for the Occupation of Japan, landed in Kanagawa, and the work of restoring the land and spirit of the people began.
