John Gibson Lockhart (1794-1854), Scottish writer and editor, is best known as the author of the definitive Memoirs of the Life of Sir Walter Scott (1838). This biography has been called the second most admirable in the English language, after Boswell. In 1818 the brilliant and handsome young man attracted the notice of Sir Walter Scott, and the acquaintance soon ripened into an intimacy which resulted in a marriage between Lockhart and Scott's eldest daughter Sophia. Between 1818 and 1825 Lockhart worked indefatigably. In 1819 Peter's Letters to his Kinsfolk appeared, and in 1822 he edited Peter Motteux's edition of Don Quixote, to which he prefixed a life of Cervantes. Four novels followed: Valerius in 1821, some passages in the Life of Adam Blair, Minister of Gospel at Cross Meikle in 1822, Reginald Dalton in 1823 and Matthew Wald in 1824. He also undertook the superintendence of the series called "Murray's Family Library, " which he opened in 1829 with The History of Napoleon Buonaparte.

John Stevens Cabot Abbott (1805-1877) who also wrote under the pseudonyms Jacob Abbott and Joseph S. C. Abbott, was an American historian, pastor, and pedagogical writer. Dr. Abbott graduated at Bowdoin College in 1825, prepared for the ministry at Andover Theological Seminary, and between 1830 and 1844, when he retired from the ministry in the Congregational Church, preached successively at Worcester, Roxbury and Nantucket, all in Massachusetts. Owing to the success of a little work, The Mother at Home; or, The Principles of Maternal Duty, he devoted himself, from 1844 onwards, to literature. He was a voluminous writer of books on Christian ethics, and of popular histories, which were credited with cultivating a popular interest in history. He is best known as the author of the widely popular Napoleon Bonaparte (1855), in which the various elements and episodes in Napoleon's career are described. Abbott takes a very favourable view towards his subject throughout. Also among his principal works are: History of the Civil War in America (1863-66), Hortense (1870), The History of Frederick II, Called Frederick the Great (1871) and Daniel Boone: The Pioneer of Kentucky (1872).

Louis Antoine Fauvelet de Bourrienne (1769-1834), French diplomat, was born at Sens. He was educated at the military school of Brienne in Champagne along with Napoleon Bonaparte. Leaving Brienne in 1787, and conceiving a distaste for the army, Bourrienne proceeded to Vienna. He was pursuing legal and diplomatic studies there, and afterwards at Leipzig, when the French Revolution broke out. Not until the spring of 1792 did Bourrienne return to France; at Paris he renewed his acquaintance with Bonaparte. They led a Bohemian life together, witnessing the mobbing of the royal family in the Tuileries and the overthrow of the Swiss Guards at the same spot. In 1798 he accompanied Bonaparte to Egypt as his private secretary. He remained by the side of the First Consul in his former capacity, but in the autumn of 1802 incurred Bonaparteas displeasure because of his very questionable financial dealings. In the spring of 1805 he was sent as French envoy to the free city of Hamburg. His fame rests not upon his achievements or his original works, which are insignificant, but upon his Memoires (10 vols., 1829-1831), which have been frequently republished and translated.
