Excerpt from Civil Wars and Monarchy in France, in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries: A History of France Principally During That Period As a German I venture to say a word upon the History of France. Great peoples and states have a double character - one national, and the other belonging to the destinies of the world. Their history, in a similar manner, presents a twofold aspect. So far as it forms an essential feature in the development of humanity generally, or records a pervailing influence exercised upon that development, it awakens a curiosity which extends far beyond the limits of nationality; it attracts the attention and becomes an object of study even to those who are not natives of the lands whose story is narrated. Perhaps the difference between the Greek authors who have treated on the history of ancient Rome in its flourishing period, and the Romans themselves, consists in the fact that the Greeks have regarded the subject as it affected the whole world, while the Romans have looked at it nationally. The object is the same: the writers differ in the positions from which they view it, but together they inform posterity. Excerpt from Caesar: The Civil Wars The history of the years 49 and 48 B. C., the period covered by this book, centres round two striking personalities - Gaius Julius Caesar and Gnaeus Pompeius. Caesar, associated with Pompeius and Crassus in the powerful Triumvirate of 60, had further increased his influence and popularity by his vigorous administration of the Consulship in 59. In this year the lex Vatinia conferred on him for five years from March 1, 59, the governorship of Gallia Cisalpina and Illyricum, to which the Senate subsequently added Gallia Narbonensis. This office was renewed in 55 by the lex Trebonia for another five years, from March 54 to March 49. During this period he subjugated Gaul by a series of brilliant campaigns, the details of which are familiar to all readers of the Gallic War. At the conclusion of this war keen observers began to recognize that the Roman world possessed a man of military capacity equal to that of Pompeius, and of personal qualities that outshone those of his rival. His daring exploits, his profuse liberality, his attractive humanity, and the extraordinary versatility of his genius, in which he may be compared with the first Napoleon, made him subsequently the most striking figure in the world of his day. Excerpt from The Paris Commune: Including the "First Manifesto of the International on the Franco-Prussian War," the "Second Manifesto of the International on the Franco-Prussian War," "the Civil War in France" In an edition recently issued by a New York publisher, the two manifestoes on the franco-prussian War are omitted, and the English abridgment of Engels' intro duction is still further abridged to make it conform to the absence of the omitted documents. Deeming it but just to both Marx and Engels that their work should be given to the public in an unabridged form, we present in this volume the first complete edition of the essays by Marx and the introduction by Engels published in the English language. The only liberty we have taken with the text is the addition of chapter titles to The Civil War in France.
