Excerpt from The History of the Papacy in the 19th Century, Vol. 2 ON 2nd September 1823, thirty-seven of the Roman cardinals walked from the church of San Silvestro to the Quirinal,1 which on account of the time of year had been prepared for the Conclave. In the long procession the first to be seen was Consalvi, bowed down by sorrow and sickness.2 He had but little prospect of being elected, because a man cannot be twice Pope in a lifetime. The cardinals were afraid of the all-powerful Secretary of State, and the people sang a malicious verse about the Conclave: Heaven free us from a despot like Consalvi.3 After him followed Pacca with firm steps and a mild countenance, and by his side walked the old Di Gregorio. Behind came Galeffi, who did not look at all intelligent, but had become the favourite of the people by his condescension. It would be wise, so runs the song, to elect the good Graleffi.4 In the procession there was also a tall lean man with tottering steps and pale cheeks it looked, says Cardinal Wiseman, as if he had just risen from a sick bed to lay himself down upon his death-bed. The man was Della Genga; of him the song says He who wishes for order in everything, must pray that Della Genga may be chosen. Excerpt from The Papacy in the 19th Century: A Part of "the History of Catholicism Since the Restoration of the Papacy" HE Roman Church is only Roman and everywhere anti-national; she endeavours to force everything into her own forms and formulas and does not rest until she has obliterated the national character of the Church and stifled all national life in the Church. The Roman Church is everywhere a foreigner, even in Italy; for she everywhere pursues tendencies which are Opposed to the tendencies of the country. The truth of these words, spoken by Bishop Herzog, is confirmed by the history Of the Papacy in this century as Professor Nip pold has set it forth. Excerpt from The History of the Papacy in the Xixth Century, Vol. 1 It was my idea to conclude my account with a brief view of the chief points in the papacy of Leo XIII., like those pages in the First Edition which dealt with the years immediately following the Vatican Council. Excerpt from The Ecclesiastical and Political History of the Popes of Rome During the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, Vol. 2 of 2 Like travellers who quit some range of lofty mountains commanding a wide and magnificent prospect, to enter a valley which circumscribes their view within its narrow boundaries, we pass from the survey of the great events of the world's history in which the papacy played so important a part, to the observation of the occurrences peculiar to the States of the Church. The States of the Church first attained to their complete constitution in the times of Urban VIII. At this epoch let us begin their history. Excerpt from The Popes of the Nineteenth Century Though the reign of Pius VIII. Was brief and in itself uneventful, the period it covered was marked by two outstanding events - both of them of a revolutionary character. The first was Catholic Emancipation in England, the news of which was enthusiastically carried by Wiseman to the Pope. The English Roman Catholics resident in Rome held a festival in celebration of the event. But, according to Wiseman, the Roman populace showed no appreciation of the importance of what had been achieved, and read as though they understood not the device triumphantly emblazoned on the English College walls Emancipazione Cattolica.
