D'urfe, Nov. 5, it appears that the Pope was in such good health, that on the third of that month he had celebrated the anniversary of his corona tion with the usual solemnities. Ibidem, 251. By another letter from the same person, we learn that on the sixth of November, 3 catarrh or de uxion fell down on the Pope's lungs, with such dangerous symptoms, that his life was im mediately despaired of. Ibid. 252. And by a third letter, We are informed that he died November the tenth. In none of these letters is his death imputed to any extraordinary cause. It appears that more than twenty days elapsed be tween Octavio's attempt on Parma and the death of his grand father, and that the disease was the natural effect of old age. An era should be pointed out, prior to which each country, little connected with those around it, may trace its own history apart; after which the transactions of every considerable nation in Europe be come interesting and instructive to all. With this intention I undertook to write the history of the Emperor charles V. It was during his administration that the powers of Europe were formed into one great political system, in which each took a station, wherein it has since remained with less variation than could have been expected after the shocks occasioned by so many internal revolutions and so many foreign wars. The great events which hap pened then have not hitherto spent their force. The political principles and max ims then established still continue to Ope rate.
