Excerpt from The History of the United States of North America, Vol. 2 of 4: From the Plantation of the British Colonies Till Their Assumption of National Independence His colonial policy is thus contrasted by an old writer, with that of Chief. Justice Popham, the promoter of the first attempts to colonize New England Judge Popham and Sir George Calvert agreed not more unanimously in the public design of planting, than they differed in the private way of it: the first was for extirpating heathens, the second for converting them. He sent away the lewdest, this the soberest people the one was for present profit, the other for a reasonable expectation - the first set up a common stock, out of which the people should be provided, by proportions; the second left every one to provide for himself. Excerpt from The History of the United States of North America, Vol. 2: From the Discovery of the Western World to the Present Day It will be discovered, as we proceed, that outwardly, the administrations of Washington and Adams conducted the development we speak of, in a di rection exactly Opposite to that which has been followed by the expansions effected under the auspices of most of their successors. Inwardly, however, and in reality, there has been a wonderful harmony between these seemingly opposite paths of national progress. We shall have little difficulty in showing, that one effort has been the equipoise to the other, one growth the comple ment of the other; so that more has been effected than either party alone, or than both together, have aimed at; and whilst the stability of the nation has been insured, the influences and courses which could most endanger that stability have been made glaringly manifest to all; and such a pledge and assurance has been given of the guidance and blessing of the King of Nations, as may well remind all who aspire to control the affairs of the Commonwealth, of the principles which actuated those who most largely shared in its found ation, and by the operation of which alone, it, or any State, can attain to real and abiding greatness in the world. Such views as these may relieve of all dulness a narrative of 'the kind that lies before us; not factitiously, and by the introduction of materials foreign to the subject but by the display of the secret meaning and tendency of the events that make up the quiet round of commercial prosperity, of those trifling matters which appear only when massed in tables of statistics, and of the most exciting affairs of times of peace - contests for office, legislative discussions. Excerpt from A History of North and South America, Vol. 2: Including the Celebrated Work by Dr. Robertson; Continued by a Complete History of the United States to the Present Time In the year 1676 he became one of the principal persons concerned in settling West New Jersey, in America; as we have already seen in the history of that colony. About this time also he wrote to some persons of great rank in Germany, as appears in his works; encouraging them to a perseverance in the paths of virtue and true religion; with the love of which he had understood their minds were happily and divinely inspired. Excerpt from Notes on the United States of North America, Vol. 2 of 2: During a Phrenological Visit in 1838-9-40 April 6. Therm. 53 . Phrenology. - I met Dr. -, and by pointing out to him how to trace the superior longitudinal commissure of the brain, described by Mr. Solly, which lies above the corpus callosum, and brings the anterior lobe into communication with the upper portions of the middle and posterior lobes, he succeeded in unfolding it very satisfactorily. The brain was in excellent condition. We tried to trace the superficial fibres described by Mr. Solly as passing from the motory track, below the corpora pyramuidalia, to the cerebellum, but were not so successful. In the evening I delivered the last lecture of my second course. The resolutions passed are printed in the Appendix, No. III. I have received an invitation to deliver a second course of lectures in the Stuyvesant Institute, New York, and have agreed to do so. The Banks. - The banks in the southwestern states have suspended cash payments, and rumors are afloat that the banks in Philadelphia will follow their example. Stocks have fallen very much, and there is great commercial embarrassment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Vikings called North America "Vinland," the land of wine. Giovanni de Verrazzano, the Italian explorer who first described the grapes of the New World, was sure that "they would yield excellent wines." And when the English settlers found grapes growing so thickly that they covered the ground down to the very seashore, they concluded that "in all the world the like abundance is not to be found." Thus, from the very beginning the promise of America was, in part, the alluring promise of wine. How that promise was repeatedly baffled, how its realization was gradually begun, and how at last it has been triumphantly fulfilled is the story told in this book. It is a story that touches on nearly every section of the United States and includes the whole range of American society from the founders to the latest immigrants. Germans in Pennsylvania, Swiss in Georgia, Minorcans in Florida, Italians in Arkansas, French in Kansas, Chinese in California—all contributed to the domestication of Bacchus in the New World. So too did innumerable individuals, institutions, and organizations. Prominent politicians, obscure farmers, eager amateurs, sober scientists: these and all the other kinds and conditions of American men and women figure in the story. The history of wine in America is, in many ways, the history of American origins and of American enterprise in microcosm. While much of that history has been lost to sight, especially after Prohibition, the recovery of the record has been the goal of many investigators over the years, and the results are here brought together for the first time. In print in its entirety for the first time, A History of Wine in America is the most comprehensive account of winemaking in the United States, from the Norse discovery of native grapes in 1001 A.D., through Prohibition, and up to the present expansion of winemaking in every state.
