Modern Travel In World History written by Tom Taylor and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-06-28 with History categories.

Modern Travel in World History uses three themes–technology, mass movements and travelers–to examine the history of the modern world from the fifteenth-century transatlantic explorations to the impact of the global COVID pandemic of the twenty-first century. This book focuses on both the evolving nature of travel, from land and sea routes in the 1500s to the domination of planes and cars in the modern world, and the important stories of travelers themselves. Taking a global perspective, the text places travel within the larger geopolitical, social, religious and cultural developments throughout history. It emphasizes not only the role of technology innovation in the ways people travel but also how those changes affect social structures and cultural values. Tom Taylor explores the journeys of well-known travelers as well as ordinary people, each with different perspectives, through the lens of gender, social class and cultural background, and considers how fictional travelers define the importance of travel in the modern world. Why people set out on the sojourns they did, what they experienced, who they met and how they understood these cross-cultural encounters are important to not only understanding the travelers themselves but the world they lived in and the world their travels made. Several maps help illustrate important routes and destinations. This book will be of interest to students of world history and literature.

Touring China written by Yajun Mo and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-15 with History categories.

In Touring China, Yajun Mo explores how early twentieth century Chinese sightseers described the destinations that they visited, and how their travel accounts gave Chinese readers a means to imagine their vast country. The roots of China's tourism market stretch back over a hundred years, when railroad and steamship networks expanded into the coastal regions. Tourism-related businesses and publications flourished in urban centers while scientific exploration, investigative journalism, and wartime travel propelled many Chinese from the eastern seaboard to its peripheries. Mo considers not only accounts of overseas travel and voyages across borderlands, but also trips within China. On the one hand, via travel and travel writing, the unity of China's coastal regions, inland provinces, and western frontiers was experienced and reinforced. On the other, travel literature revealed a persistent tension between the aspiration for national unity and the anxiety that China might fall apart. Touring China tells a fascinating story about the physical and intellectual routes people took on various journeys, against the backdrop of the transition from Chinese empire to nation-state.

This work is comprised of narratives by the most distinguished nineteenth-century travellers. It is embellished with fine engravings on steel by Buttre, and illustrated by over forty wood engravings by Orr, with thirteen authentic maps by Schonberg. It is a facsimile reprint of the revised and enlarged edition published in two volumes by Moore, Wilstach, Keys in New York in 1860. Published in 1860, this is one of the very early encyclopedias on the history of travel and travel writings. Compiled by Bayard Taylor, popular travel writer and journalist in late nineteenth-century America, it covers all major travels and exploration by westerners to non-western countries from the beginning of nineteenth century, when 'the age of exploration and discovery' started. Including maps and illustrations, this Encyclopedia is an easy-to-use tool for scholars and students to research the history of travel and western encounters of other cultures.
