Excerpt from The Housing of the Working Classes For more than fifty years the conditions, under which a large proportion of the Working Classes live, have attracted public attention. This seems difficult to realize in face of the present position, though it is none the less true that many attempts have been made to remove the more pressing evils. Bright among the records of the past stand out many heroic attempts in this direction, and many honoured names are to be found among the pioneers of the movement. The value of their efforts we cannot too highly appreciate, though the measure of their success fell far short of the noble aspirations they had in view. To-day the work has passed out of the hands of the few large-hearted philanthropists and has assumed a national character, and with this change has come a vastly different attitude towards the problem. Where hitherto we found apathy, if not actual hostility, we find to-day hearty co-operation. Hence the last three or four years have been a period of unparalleled activity, and, what is perhaps more important, the efforts to establish a new and better condition have been general throughout the country. Two factors have mainly contributed to this end; (1) the advance of Sanitary Science, and (2) the development of an altruistic attitude towards political and social questions, - each in its own sphere a part of that "forward movement" which has been so specially characteristic of the latter half of the nineteenth century. The Sanitary Reformer is but beginning his work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Why did slums and suburbs develop simultaneously? Did the capitalist system produce these, and were class antagonisms to blame? Why did the Victorians believe there was a housing problem, and who or what created it? What housing solutions were attempted, and how successfully? These are amongst the central questions addressed by social and urban historians in recent years, and their arguments and analyses are reviewed here. The history of housing between 1780 and 1914 encapsulates many problems associated with the transition from a largely rural to an overwhelmingly urban nation. The unprecedented pace of this transition imposed immense tensions within society, with implications for the urban environment and for local and national government. Housing is central to an understanding of the social, economic, political and cultural forces in nineteenth-century history; this book is an ideal introduction to the topic.

In the past, accounts of housing were dominated by the analysis of the problems of slum property at the bottom of the market, and the way in which public housing emerged from attempts to ameliorate the worst conditions, in an apparently inevitable process. This title questions this perception by focussing on the process of development, architectural forms, the pattern of ownership, property management and control, and public policy.
