Excerpt from The Honor of His House In the first place, I plead for the woman in this story - the woman who erred. She was just an ordinary woman, without much time for leisure or cultivation; but there was a desire for development. She had ideals, as all women have, no matter what their station in life, but her ideals were not clearly definable; she was ambitious without having any avowed objective. Her greatest need was sympathy. The craving for sympathy overwhelmed her; the longing for sanctuary from what she believed to be the oppressive was too insistent to give the more rational faculties an opportunity to exert themselves and save her. The sanctuary she sought has been found by thousands of misunderstood women - and the world is full of that class; but in her case there was Interposition - the sanctuary was denied. Excerpt from Honor: A Family Drama in Three Acts The study of Colonel Wendell's home on the north shore of Long Island during the month of October. Book cases, etchings and engraved portraits surround the room. In front is a massive library table on which stands a vase filled with roses, an electric lamp, Shakespeare and Tennyson in morocco, and current monthlies. To the left are French windows, with a small writing desk between. Farther back is a door opening into the hall. In the back are folding doors opening into the drawing-room, with pedestals and busts of Longfellow and Whittier on either side. In the right corner is a leather settee. Farther front is an open fireplace, and a mantel which supports a large Swiss clock and silver candelabra. A newly lighted log fire is blazing on the hearth. Heavy chairs of appropriate design and Persian rugs complete the furnishings. The time is eight o'clock in the evening. Catherine is reading Lord Byron's poetry by the electric lamp. Paul comes to the door, stops, sees her, and comes in. Paul. I've been looking for you. I thought you had gone upstairs with Emma. Catherine (looking up, a little annoyed at the interruption). Excerpt from Question of Honor: A Novel There is something in the place itself which is suggestive of melancholy, some people think; though there are others who like nothing better than these old houses which are full of the dignity of age. The Severn house is one of them. It is of brick, substantially built after the manner of a past generation, though there is nothing inconveniently ancient about it, owmg to its having been remodeled once or twice according to modern ideas of comfort. Its dark tone gives it a somewhat sombre look, as it stands among the large brown trunks and green, overhanging boughs of its noble oaks, but this aspect pleases the eye which is able to appreciate the exquisite repose that dwells in subdued coloring. There is a stone-flagged portico in front, and many quaint, pleasant nooks both within and without, while a growth of English ivy spreads like a green wall over its western side, climbing to the very attic-window, and almost closing up one or two of the chamber-easements. The grounds surrounding the house are very spacious. On one side is a stretch of close-shorn turf, over which a few beautiful evergreens are set, while on the other a hedge divides the lawn from one of the most attrae tive of old-fashioned gardens, where cedar and box, roses and mignonette flourish, and there is always fragrance and repose. Strangers are invariably struck by the air of space and comfort which pervades every thing. How much room you have! The Speakers Of The House Classic Reprint written by Hubert Bruce Fuller and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-12 with Political Science categories.

Excerpt from The Speakers of the House In 1789, when the first Congress convened under Washington, the Speaker of the House of Representatives was merely a moderator, who presided over the sessions of that body with calm deliberation and impartial favor. The prestige of his position lay rather in its honor than in its power. In 1909, after an interval of a hundred and twenty years, the Speaker of the House of Representatives is quite the most potent factor in American legislative life. There is some room for saying that he is even more powerful than the President of the United States. Today the Speaker is the absolute arbiter of our national legislation. He can dictate what laws shall be enacted and what bills shall be defeated. An attempt has been made in this volume to give a brief, dispassionate story of this development of power by the presiding officers of the lower House of Congress. Effort has been made to avoid the dry and technical mysteries of parliamentary law. The book is not intended as a text book on that intricate subject. In the effort to popularize the work all annotations and references have been omitted of purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
