Time-travel continues to exercise its mesmeric fascination upon writers, readers and editors of science fiction alike. Probably because almost all of us, at one time or another, have longed greatly to visit either the future or the past. Perhaps, in view of the dangerous paradoxes such travel must involve, it is a good thing that such horological journeys have to date been confined to the printed page. New neighbors are always exciting. But the anachronistic MacDonalds offered a bit too much.

The house stood at the end of a road that seemed to have forgotten its purpose. It was a road that should have led somewhere, but it simply ended at the house, a jagged scar on the face of the desolate landscape. Locals called it the House at the End of Nowhere, and they spoke of it in hushed tones, their eyes filled with a fear that was as tangible as the wind that whipped across the barren plains. I had always been drawn to the macabre, to the places where shadows seemed to linger a little longer. So, when I heard about the house, a morbid curiosity ignited within me. I had to see it for myself. The drive was a journey into isolation, but it wasn't until I was miles from civilization that I realized how truly alone I was. The road, a ribbon of asphalt, stretched out before me, a solitary thread in an ocean of nothingness. The sky was a vast, indifferent canvas painted with hues of gray, and the wind howled a mournful symphony. As I drove, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. The car radio crackled with static, occasionally emitting bursts of distorted voices that seemed to whisper my name. I switched it off, my hands trembling slightly. As I drew closer, the house loomed larger, a monolithic presence against the horizon. It was a Victorian mansion, its once proud architecture now worn and weathered by the relentless onslaught of time and nature. Broken windows stared like empty eyes, and a creeping vine had begun to claim the facade as its own. But there was something else, something that made my skin crawl. The vines seemed to pulse and writhe, as if they were alive and hungry. A sense of unease crept into me as I parked my car and stepped out into the biting wind. The air was thick with an oppressive silence, broken only by the whisper of dead leaves skittering across the ground. As I approached the house, I could have sworn I saw faces in the windows, pale and gaunt, watching me with hollow eyes. But when I blinked, they were gone. The front door creaked open with a protest, revealing a cavernous interior shrouded in twilight. Dust motes danced in the shafts of sunlight that filtered through the broken windows, casting eerie patterns on the floor. The house was a labyrinth of decaying grandeur, with rooms that seemed to stretch on forever. The wallpaper was peeling, revealing glimpses of a past that was both opulent and terrifying.

A ten-year-old girl learns the importance of family and community in this tale of love and hope set during the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Armani Curtis can think about only one thing: her tenth birthday. All her friends are coming to her party, her mama is making a big cake, and she has a good feeling about a certain wrapped box. Turning ten is a big deal to Armani. It means she’s older, wiser, more responsible. But when Hurricane Katrina hits the Lower Nines of New Orleans, Armani realizes that being ten means being brave, watching loved ones die, and mustering all her strength to help her family weather the storm. A powerful story of courage and survival, Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere celebrates the miraculous power of hope and love in the face of the unthinkable. Praise for Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere “Lamana goes for and achieves realism here, carefully establishing the characters and setting before describing in brutal detail, beyond what is typical in youth literature, the devastating effects of Katrina—loss of multiple family members, reports of attacks in the Superdome, bodies drifting in the current and less-than-ideal shelter conditions. An honest, bleak account of a national tragedy sure to inspire discussion and research.” —Kirkus Reviews “I recommend the book because I think it does a good job of capturing what life was like in New Orleans both before and after Katrina and because Armani’s journey will give readers a lot to think about and discuss. But parents will want to know that it doesn’t flinch when describing the death and destruction that hit New Orleans during that time and be cautious with younger, sensitive readers.” —Cindy Hudson, author of Book by Book
