Excerpt from The Human Factor in Business I do not propose in this book to discuss the basis of industry, but I suggest that whatever experience may teach us in that respect, there are certain conditions which must be secured for the workers, no matter what the industrial structure may be. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from The Human Side of Business Since human nature is the same the world over, it follows that the personal methods which are productive in one instance will be in another, and that there are certain under lying principles that can be commonly applied. The libraries are well stocked with business literature, but the fact remains that nearly all of the available publications are so general in character that they have little tangible value or else are so technical that they are of use only in special lines. The purpose of this book is to portray a phase of business that, from a practical point of view, is more important than all the others. Excerpt from Human Factors in Technology For some time we have thought that those scientific and engineering efforts investigating the relation of man to his technological environment should be reviewed more adequately in the professional literature. Even the new interdisciplinary journals such as Ergonomics, the ire T rans actions on Human Factors in Electronics, and the Journal of the Human Factors Society, depending heavily upon spontaneously contributed articles, have not as yet been able to present as wide a technical over view of the field as is necessary. With this need in mind, in the spring of 1960, when the Human Factors Society invited us to prepare their fourth annual meeting, we were delighted to accept an opportunity to test some of our ideas about presenting a range of topics focused upon the many-faceted relation between man and his technology. We asked an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers to work with us in selecting the subject areas that together would provide a thorough overview of the field. We also asked this team to help us in selecting and obtaining the cooperation of an outstanding man in each of these areas who would, as Session Chair man, be responsible for inviting speakers to represent his particular discipline. The Fourth Annual Meeting of the Human Factors Society was held on September 12 - 14, 1960, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. By all appearances it was a success, for a truly interdisciplinary audience was given an opportunity to learn of the problems and recent achievements in a wide range of human factors areas. ‘Graham Greene's beautiful and disturbing novel is filled with tenderness, humour, excitement and doubt’ The Times A leak is traced to a small sub-section of the secret service, sparking off the inevitable security checks, tensions and suspicions. The sort of atmosphere, perhaps, where mistakes could be made? For Maurice Castle, it is the end of the line anyway, and time for him to retire to live peacefully with his wife and child. But no-one escapes so easily from the lonely, isolated, neurotic world of the SIS. WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY COLM TÓIBÍN
