"Seventy Years Among Savages" by Henry S. Salt is a collection of essays about animal welfare. Some notable titles include The argument -- Where ignorance was bliss -- Literæ inhumaniores -- The discovery -- Cannibal's conscience -- Glimpses of civilization -- The poet-pioneer -- Voices crying in the wilderness -- A league of humaneness -- Twentieth-century tortures -- Hunnish sports and fashions – etc. Excerpt: "The seventy years spent by me among savages form the subject of this story, but not, be it noted, seventy years of consciousness that my life was so cast, for during the first part of my residence in the strange land where I was born, the dreadful reality of my surroundings was hardly suspected by me, except now and then, perhaps, in a passing glimmer of apprehension. Then, by slow degrees, incident after incident brought a gradual awakening, until at last there dawned on my mind the conviction which alone could explain and reconcile for me the many contradictions of our society—that we were not "civilized" but "savages"—that the "dark ages," far from being part of a remote past, were very literally present."

Nation-states are compelled to function within the parameters of their respective geo-political and geo-strategic environment. The behavior of nations, and the interplay of their strengths and vulnerabilities, particularly, their foreign and military posturing, is predicated on geographic, political and economic factors. Besides, historical imperatives also coalesce in determining the way States shape their policies. Many Asian countries today are threatened by a war that is of a subtle and imperceptible nature. There is also a paradigm shift in the perception of national security, especially with the blurring of the notion of internal and external security. This is reflected in the growing military expenditures of several Asian countries. This volume attempts to examine the critical factors that influence the foreign and defense policies of Asian countries. It provides comprehensive information and analyses of the strengths, needs, aspirations and compulsions that shape their strategic and military outlook..

In international humanitarian law (IHL), the principle of distinction delineates the difference between the civilian and the combatant, and it safeguards the former from being intentionally targeted in armed conflicts. This monograph explores the way in which the idea of distinction circulates within, and beyond, IHL. Taking a bottom-up approach, the multi-sited study follows distinction across three realms: the kinetic realm, where distinction is in motion in South Sudan; the pedagogical realm, where distinction is taught in civil-military training spaces in Europe; and the intellectual realm, where distinction is formulated and adjudicated in Geneva and the Hague. Directing attention to international humanitarian actors, the book shows that these actors seize upon signifiers of 'civilianness' in everyday practice. To safeguard their civilian status, and to deflect any qualities of 'combatantness' that might affix to them, humanitarian actors strive to distinguish themselves from other international actors in their midst. The latter include peacekeepers working for the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), and soldiers who deploy with NATO missions. Crucially, some of the distinctions enacted cut along civilian-civilian lines, suggesting that humanitarian actors are longing for something more than civilian status - the 'civilian plus'. This special status presents a paradox: the appeal to the 'civilian plus' undermines general civilian protection, yet as the civilian ideal becomes increasingly beleaguered, a special civilian status appears ever more desirable. However disruptive these practices may be to the principle of distinction in IHL, the monograph emphasizes that even at the most normative level there is no bright line distinction to be found.
