Everything about hunting leads inexorably to death; the challenge for all hunters is how to justify the kill. But the hunter's emotional response to the kill is immensely complex. Hunters respect--and even love--the animals they kill. Talking to the Shaman Within: Musings on Hunting addresses this paradox head-on, dissecting the emotional and psychological response of the hunter to his quarry and, more broadly, his surroundings. The climax of the chase brings the hunter closer to realizing the "nature intelligence" that modern civilization has suppressed. Through his investigation of the "instinct" that lies beneath the urge to hunt, author Manfred F. R. Kets de Vries reveals something basic and fundamental about human behavior. The hunting instinct is hardwired into the human psyche, and, for all our sophistication and urbanization, it exerts a powerful influence over the way we conduct our lives even to this day. Talking to the Shaman Within draws on depictions of hunting in art and literature throughout the ages exploring changing trends in human social norms with frequent reference to literature, art, film, television, and music. It unites a dispassionate academic hypothesis with an engaging and colourful narrative into which Kets de Vries weaves stories from his own life--as both an academic and a hunter.

Many of the foremost social scientists of our times, including Freud, Jung and Fromm, consider hunting instinctual in man, a basic yet little understood human drive that has played a profound influence upon our culture, consciousness, and physical body. Yet hunting is condemned by many as a cruel and inhumane pursuit in an era of urban expansion and animal rights activism. This thought-provoking book gathers together the rich heritage, customs, and histories of the hunt from worldwide cultures to present a penetrating picture of the hunter's soul.

Hunting: Youve Got to Be Kidding! is my narrative of reaching a major milestone as a hunter. This documentation of my pursuit contains spiritual, financial, emotional, and sometimes humorous excerpts of my hunting career. Why do I hunt? Im pressed for an answer to this question daily because my lifes passion is on public display. Trophys Steakhouse, which Becky and I own, provides an atmosphere of exuberance and a forum to promote hunting. Museum would describe Trophys much closer than steak house, as the restaurant is enriched with the rewards of twenty years of successful trophy collection. Our customers are both hunters and nonhunters who appreciate the hunting theme and dont require an answer to the question. Invariably, I must provide a detailed explanation to a select few as to why I havent changed from a hunter-gatherer to the modern rendition of a man. My respect for wild animals complicates my answer. Our genetic engineering by God places us as masters of animal and plant life, both of whom are alive and function to nourish us. Therefore, my answer is because I am pursuing a bred-in instinct to hunt and gather as our ancestors did for a millennium. I am proud to have this genetic makeup. I continue to preserve Gods creatures by being part of the hunting community. Hunters generously contribute time and money to increase habitat for wild animals while at the same time protect hunters rights. I have achieved my hunting goals because of the contributions of hunters!

If theatre were a religion, explains David Mamet in his opening chapter, 'many of the observations and suggestions in this book might be heretical'. As always, Mamet delivers on his promise: in Theatre, the acclaimed author of Glengarry Glen Ross and Speed the Plow, calls for nothing less than the death of the director and the end of acting theory. For Mamet, actors are either good or they are non-actors, and good actors generally work best without the interference of a director, however well-intentioned. Issue plays, political correctness, method actors, impossible directions, Stanislavksy, and elitists all fall under Mamet's critical gaze. To students, teacher, and directors, who crave a blast of fresh air in a world that can be insular and fearful of change, Theatre throws down a gauntlet that challenges everyone to do better, including Mamet himself. From iconic and idiosyncratic director and playwright David Mamet, a mischievous manifesto designed to defrock the high priests and challenge the holy bibles of the theatre world.
