Erhaps even more attractive is the idea to use the sun's heat for splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen and storing them in two separate vessels. The high temperature produced by recombining oxygen and hydrogen is known to be the most intense heat available to mankind. Moreover, one could use the hydrogen for lighting, and inexpensively produced oxygen would also close a longstanding gap. But how can one use the sun's energy to split water? In my opinion, thermopiles, which have already accomplished excellent performance, could solve this problem ..."--The Back Cover.

With its portable, storable, and zero-emission features, hydrogen energy is regarded as one of the most promising alternative energies for the next generation. Along with developing hydrogen technology applications, Japan's pilot experiments have demonstrated the feasibility of a hydrogen society. However, empirical studies are still scarce and limited to energy efficiency analysis or cost-benefit analysis, and lack inclusive discussion contributing to the evidence-based approach targeting policy implementation of the hydrogen roadmap. The research aims to provide a quantitative impact assessment of Japan's hydrogen society by applying the GTAP-E-Power model with the technology foresight parameters of 2025-2035 sourced from the SciREX Policy Intelligence Assistance System - Economic Simulator (SPIAS-e) to investigate the change in output, price, and defragmentation of supply chains of energy sectors, as well as the emission of carbon dioxide from domestic and foreign firms. In the scenario of transitioning the existing fossil power of coal, natural gas, crude oil, and other renewable energies including solar and wind power, the simulation results demonstrated that the CO2 emission by domestic firms in the transportation and service sectors could be reduced by 3.3% and 2.3%, respectively, for power generation sectors, a total equivalent to 26.6 million tons thanks to the improvement in energy efficiency. In comparison, the export of transport equipment and energy-intensive sectors increased by 6.5% and 5.6%, respectively. Moreover, the welfare analysis of equivalent variations of Japan's hydrogen society showed an increase of $75,696 million and a 1.3% growth in GDP.

Hydrogen energy has garnered attention as a future energy source due to its eco-friendly nature, availability for storage and transport and flexibility in production and consumption. Efforts to supply the hydrogen energy in the real world, however, have faced difficulties. Fortunately, changes in the global energy mix and technological innovation reignited interests in the energy source. Investments in hydrogen energy by the major economies have gained momentum thanks to an increased production of renewable energy sources, the shale revolution and a nuclear power phase-out. Technological innovation in production, transport, storage, charging and applications of hydrogen has improved economic viability of the energy at a rapid pace.Amid the shift, developed countries are bracing themselves for the coming “Hydrogen Society” by establishing a new paradigm and strengthening competitiveness of the industry. The U.S. is expanding production of hydrogen with price competitiveness by using natural gas steam reformation technologies. European countries are producing hydrogen by utilizing excess electricity from abundant renewable energy sources. Hydrogen transport infrastructure leveraging existing natural gas grid is under development in the region as well.Japan, on the contrary, is making use of by-product hydrogen, a by-product of petroleum refinery and steel manufacturing and installing a large scale hydrogen network in preparation for imports of hydrogen from overseas markets. In particular, the Japanese government has been actively engaging in various hydrogen demonstration projects in partnership with the private sector since the early 2000s. It also has shown a strong political will to foster the hydrogen industry by stipulating the realization of a “Hydrogen Society” as the county's goal in the Strategic Energy Plan of Japan (2013).Major advanced countries have built their country's own paradigm to prepare for the “Hydrogen Society” by teaming up with the private sector from planning to execution. However, Korea is not fully prepared to usher in the hydrogen economy. This report will compare the Korean hydrogen industry with that of major economies and provide a growth potential outlook as well as the future direction of the industry.

This book provides a comprehensive and contemporary overview of advances in energy and energy storage technologies. Although the coverage is varied and diverse, the book also addresses unifying patterns and trends in order to enrich readers’ understanding of energy and energy storage systems, particularly hydrogen energy storage, including e.g. their morphology, porosity and material structure. Readers will also gain insights into the hydrogen storage performance landscape, based on data released by the US Department of Energy (DOE), providing a basis for understanding real-world applications. The book also discusses the superior hydrogen storage performance of solid-state materials and explores the physical and chemical properties that can potentially affect their performance.
