People have widely believed that buildings should last forever and stand the test of time; therefore architecture was built on that idea of permanence. Architecture was constructed using methods [i.e. nailing, welding, and gluing] and materials [i.e. concrete, lead, asphalt, etc] that could not be deconstructed and only ended up in a landfill. Now that waste has become an important environmental issue, buildings need to be designed on a new idea based on temporariness. This thesis will examine "Adaptive Architecture" and how a new idea of temporary architecture will solve the problem of permanent, wasteful architecture. Adaptive architecture will be defined as an architectural system that allows prefabricated units to "plug-in", slide, and attach/detach to better meet the changing needs of the inhabitants. Those prefabricated units will allow better management of construction wastes while the ability to adapt to changing needs will allow for the units to continue being used, or reused in a different way or location. As the thesis progresses, a prototype model of the unit will be built in order to explore and test the adaptability of the system. The test will include how the unit is plugged into the system, how the units slide in order to change public/private space and sun shading/views, and how additions/subtractions can be made. Tests will also be done on how the components/systems are installed, work together, and are replaced as needed or wanted.

Temporary architecture is flourishing in our urban public spaces. Branded ‘pop-ups’ and follies to provide a moment of light entertainment they are in fact borne of a long history of more holistic architecture that is subtly suggesting how we could live, work and play more harmoniously together. Featuring revealing interviews with 13 young, emerging and socially-minded practices from New York and Santiago to London, Berlin and Zurich it also analyses this phenomenon in critical essays by well-respected practitioners and thinkers. Providing a highly personal insight into the architects’ experience, the design process, the challenges they encountered and how it affected their practice it sheds light on the growth of multidisciplinary collectives, community engagement and more participatory ways of designing, making and building. Including highly illustrated and imaginative projects ranging from a floating cinema and tiny travelling theatre, through ad-hoc structures made of found objects and discarded materials, and blow-up plastic bubbles, to a community lido and market restaurant this will open your eyes as to what is possible in architecture.

Permanence as an architectural concept is no longer restricted to the Vitruvian virtue of firmitas. To think about it in this sense today produces a schism: absolutism in a world of relativism. The fourth volume of Inflection extrapolates the permanent and the temporary not as opposing forces, but as a spectrum to be navigated at each stage of architecture's unfolding narrative. Through each of the responses presented in this year's edition, Permanence provides a critical voice as architecture and design continually seek an enduring foothold in an inherently evolving landscape, physical or otherwise. Inflection is a student-run design journal based at the Melbourne School of Design, University of Melbourne. Born from a desire to stimulate debate and generate ideas, it advocates the discursive voice of students, academics and practitioners. Founded in 2013, Inflection is a home for provocative writing—a place to share ideas and engage with contemporary discourse.

"As one of the outcomes of the Ephemeral City Research Project conceived in the Harvard Graduate School of Design with the aim of bringing to light the idea that nonpermanent configurations of the urban landscape are legitimate within the discourse on cities this book describes temporary settlements from all over the world that challenge the illusion of the permanence of the urban landscape. Ephemeral Urbanism invites us to ponder over aspects of material impermanence such as dematerialization and disassembly as an integral part of the designand construction processes of cities. Ranging from the scale of the small temporary infill within the urban, to the scale of the ephemeral mega cities, this book gives an overview of hundreds of cases, analyzing settlements or configurations that are constructed for a limited period of time. Through diagrams, photographs and aerial images, this preliminary survey presents an exploration of ome interesting prototypes of flexible urban planning and design. Texts by Richard Sennett and Ricky Burdett give the appropriate framework to understand the relevance of this book."--Provider.

The Temporary City written by Peter Bishop and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Buildings, Temporary categories.

Peter Bishop and Lesley Williams explore the growing interest among practitioners at the cutting edge of architecture, urban design and regeneration, in temporary, interim, 'pop-up' or 'meanwhile' uses for land and buildings in our urban areas. They explore the origins and the social, economic and technological drivers behind this phenomenon, and its place within modern planning theory and practice. Using sixty-eight diverse case studies from Europe and North America, it challenges our preoccupation with long-term strategies and masterplans and questions our ability to achieve these in the face of increasing resource constraints and political and economic uncertainty.
