"As its first and most daring theorist, and later its most penetrating left-wing critic, Leon Trotsky will for ever be associated with the fate of the Russian Revolution. Yet little of real substance has ever been written about his genuine but unfinished contribution to Marxist thought in the twentieth century. This volume seeks to fill that vacuum through a critical assessment of his views on political economy, the party, revolution, philosophy and culture. This book also contains a number of brief but incisive essays on the turbulent history of the Left Opposition, as well as a lively and iconoclastic discussion of the way his ideas have been interpreted - and misinterpreted - by both friends and enemies alike. The last section of the volume brings to the English-speaking world previously untranslated material by Trotsky on his mature reflections on the world economy in the interwar period. Neither crude polemic nor simple-minded hagiography, The Ideas of Leon Trotsky fills a major gap in our understanding of one of the most controversial thinkers of our age."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The ideas of Lenin and Trotsky are without doubt the most distorted and slandered ideas in history. For more than 100 years, they have been subjected to an onslaught from the apologists of capitalism, who have attempted to present their ideas – Bolshevism – as both totalitarian and utopian. An entire industry was developed in an attempt to equate the crimes of Stalinism with the regime of workers' democracy that existed under Lenin and Trotsky. It is now more than fifty years since the publication of the first edition of this work. It was written as a reply to Monty Johnstone, who was a leading theoretician of the Communist Party of Great Britain. Johnstone had published a reappraisal of Leon Trotsky in the Young Communist League's journal Cogito at the end of 1968. Alan Woods and Ted Grant used the opportunity to write a detailed reply explaining the real relationship between the ideas of Lenin and Trotsky. This was no academic exercise. It was written as an appeal to the ranks of the Communist Party and the Young Communist League to rediscover the truth about Trotsky and return to the original revolutionary programme of Lenin. Also included in this new edition is Monty Johnstone's original Cogito article, as well as further material on Lenin's struggle with Stalin in the last month of his political life. The foreword is written by Trotsky's grandson, Vsievolod Volkov.

This is the first comprehensive exposition and critical analysis of Trotsky's social and political ideas. Eschewing the polemics which have characterized so much of the literature on Trotsky, but not abandoning the critical approach, the author shows that Trotsky's was the most far-reaching and original of theoretical attempts to deal with the relationship between Marxism and the Social-Democratic movement on the one hand and backwardness and the problems of pre-industrial or underdeveloped society on the other. The author also deals in detail with the problem of why Trotsky, once a violent opponent of Bolshevism, later became one of its most ardent supporters and, indeed, leaders. This book is, therefore, as much a study of the Russian Revolution as of the ideas of one man. [Back cover].

Since My Life was first published it has been regarded as a unique political, literary and human document. Written in the first year of Trotsky's exile in Turkey, it contains the earliest authoritative account of the rise of Stalinism and the expulsion of the Left Opposition, who heroically fought for the ideas and traditions of Lenin. Trotsky's exile is the culmination of a narrative which moves from his childhood, his education in the "universities" of Tsarist prisons, Siberia and then foreign exile - to his involvement in the European revolutionary movement and his central role in the tempestuous 1905 revolution and the Bolshevik victory in October 1917 and the civil war which followed. The work concludes with his deportation and exile. With an introduction by Alan Woods and a preface by Trotsky's grandson, Vsievolod Volkov.

Born Lev Davidovich Bronstein in southern Ukraine, Trotsky was both a world-class intellectual and a man capable of the most narrow-minded ideological dogmatism. He was an effective military strategist and an adept diplomat, who staked the fate of the Bolshevik revolution on the meager foundation of a Europe-wide Communist upheaval. He was a master politician who played his cards badly in the momentous struggle for power against Stalin in the 1920s. And he was an assimilated, indifferent Jew who was among the first to foresee that Hitler's triumph would mean disaster for his fellow European Jews, and that Stalin would attempt to forge an alliance with Hitler if Soviet overtures to the Western democracies failed. Here, Trotsky emerges as a brilliant and brilliantly flawed man. Rubenstein offers us a Trotsky who is mentally acute and impatient with others, one of the finest students of contemporary politics who refused to engage in the nitty-gritty of party organization in the 1920s, when Stalin was maneuvering, inexorably, toward Trotsky's own political oblivion. As Joshua Rubenstein writes in his preface, "Leon Trotsky haunts our historical memory. A preeminent revolutionary figure and a masterful writer, Trotsky led an upheaval that helped to define the contours of twentieth-century politics." In this lucid and judicious evocation of Trotsky's life, Joshua Rubenstein gives us an interpretation for the twenty-first century.
