Abstract: The purpose of this study was to identify the key factors student-athletes perceived to be important in their decision-making to stay in school. To accomplish this purpose, it was necessary to: 1) construct a conceptual model of student-athlete retention based upon the literature associated with traditional student retention and the college student-athlete experience, 2) utilize the conceptual model of student-athlete retention to guide the creation of an instrument that captures student-athlete perceptions of factors important to the retention process, and 3) use exploratory factor analysis to extract meaningful factors underlying the items of the instrument. Participants in this study consisted of 330 NCAA Division I student-athletes attending a large west coast university. Using the Understanding College Student-Athlete Retention Questionnaire developed for this study, data were collected in person during a team meeting for each participating sport. A total of 42 items, one question regarding intent to leave, and 17 demographic questions were included in the questionnaire. The Likert-scaled items were measured on a six-point scale ranging from Not Important (1) to Very Important (6) with the Importance scale referring to how important each statement is to the participant's decision to stay in school. Principal components analysis with VARIMAX rotation extracted a four-factor model. Cronbach's alpha and split-half (Spearman-Brown) reliability coefficients were calculated for the instrument and for each extracted factor. The questionnaire had a reliability coefficient of .930, whereas each factor had a reliability coefficient greater than or equal to .784. Forty-one of the 42 items included in the questionnaire loaded onto one of four factors: Quality of Academic Experience, Quality of Athletic Experience, In-Network Support, and Out-Of-Network Support. These four factors reflect what student-athletes perceived to be important to the student-athlete retention process. Factor scores were also calculated for each factor based on intent to leave. Results indicated that respondents who did not have intentions of leaving school early placed a significantly higher level of importance on the Quality of Academic Experience, whereas respondents who did have intentions of leaving school early placed a significantly higher level of importance on the Quality of Athletic Experience.

Although there has been a growing body of research on student-athlete retention in higher education, no studies to date have conducted a meta-analysis for investigating predictors of student-athlete retention and attrition. Moreover, the results of existing literature indicate that the factors impacting collegiate athletes' retention are mixed. Since student-athletes are from various backgrounds and different types of schools (e.g., Division I, II, III schools, or community colleges), it is crucial to address a generalized and coherent evidence of numerous factors from the multiple independent studies. Toward that end, conducting a meta-analysis is necessary and critical at this stage. Meta-analysis is the most valuable and effective statistical technique to better understand the factors predicting retention for this specialized subgroup of the higher education student population because it illustrates a quantitative summarization of various factors. Furthermore, meta-analysis allows researchers to compare differences between the retention predictors within a group of collegiate student-athletes from diverse backgrounds and different institutions.A total of 85 independent effect sizes were obtained from the 30 studies on various predictors of collegiate student-athlete retention and attrition. The results of the meta-analysis indicate that personal characteristics of student-athletes, including gender and race are strong predictors of their retention and attrition. The characteristic of the institutions in which student-athletes enroll in public or private schools is also important moderators of retention. Academic variables (standardized tests, high school GPA, high school rank, college GPA, and academic integration) are found to significantly correlate with retention and attrition. When it comes to athletic variables, sport types, changing coaches, playing time, and team success are discovered as moderators. Lastly, institutional supports and services are shown to be predictors of retention and attrition.The study aims to provide school administrators, educators, policymakers, and scholars with generalized evidence for promoting student-athlete retention. The findings of this research will allow them to objectively evaluate factors, their effectiveness, and for whom and under what conditions they are effective. Ultimately, practitioners and educators will be able to implement the outcomes of this study to increase collegiate student-athletes' retention in their educational setting.

The primary purpose of this study was to identify factors that were significantly related to student athletes' sense of belonging at private Division II institutions. Prior research guided the identification of three (3) clusters of factors found to be important to student integration (a) students' input characteristics i.e., those factors in students' campus environment that have been found to influence their social and academic involvement, (b) institutional characteristics, and (c) factors identified as having an influence specifically on the integration of student athletes. A 15-item questionnaire measuring sense of belonging was administered to student athletes enrolled at six Division II institutions. Four variables emerged as statistically significant predictors of sense of belonging among student athletes: (a) satisfaction with social life on campus, (b) perceived concern for students by faculty members, (c) social relationships with coaches, and (d) current cumulative GPA. The results of this study suggest that coaches, faculty members, advisors, and other members of the higher education community play a valuable role in helping student athletes experience a sense of belonging, especially when their interactions extend beyond the traditional roles of "coach," "teacher," or "advisor" into more authentic relationships with student athletes.

Collegiate athletes experience mental health concerns at similar rates to non-athlete students, however, the student-athlete population underutilizes professional mental health help with only 10% of those in need seeking services. Criticisms of the extant research on studentathlete mental health help-seeking include studies that lack theoretical guidance, and convenience samples who are not experiencing a mental health issue. The aim of this study was to conduct a theoretically driven investigation assessing factors of help-seeking associated with the Health Belief Model and Reasoned Action Approach while sampling student-athletes who identified as currently experiencing a personal or emotional health concern. More specifically, the purpose of this study was to investigate which factors of help-seeking behavior predict the likelihood that a student-athlete will seek professional help, and to identify the differences in help-seeking factors between student-athletes with a lower likelihood of seeking help compared to those with a higher likelihood of seeking help. Participants were 269 NCAA student-athletes who completed an online survey assessing factors related to their help-seeking behavior. A multiple liner regression reveled that perceived benefits, perceived susceptibility, and perceived attitudes factors were significant predictors of the likelihood that a student-athlete would seek treatment. Results from a one-way MANOVA showed significant differences between the lower likelihood and the higher likelihood of seeking help group on the perceived seriousness, perceived susceptibility, perceived benefits, instrumental barriers, stigma-related barriers, and the perceived attitudes factors. Additional information gathered in this study suggests the most frequently reported factors which prevented student-athletes from seeking help include a belief the issues they are experiencing is not that serious, or a desire to seek help from a source other than a mental health professional. Findings from this study have implications for athletic departments, campus counseling centers, and future interventions designed to enhance mental health help-seeking.

This study examines the reasons student athletes choose their major and the challenges they face creating a successful student identity, and ultimately graduating with degrees of value to them. A survey was created utilizing themes from previous studies, and distributed at one Midwestern Division I university. Questions regarding time management, academic conflicts, health issues, service usage, selection of major, career aspirations, and perceptions of identity, following Arthur Chickering's theory of College Student Development were asked. Results show the majority of the 171 student athlete respondents indicated few conflicts with time management (e.g., they generally have time to complete class work), health (e.g., they generally do not have difficulties maintaining health), or academics (e.g., they generally can take needed classes). Student athletes utilize few of the services provided such as early registration and study table, and most have chosen their major out of interest. They also perceive their identity as both student and athlete, not primarily as one or the other. There were several significant differences between gender in health, academic service usage, and identity perception. Female student athletes feel stressed, use academic services, and perceive themselves primarily as a student more than their juniors than freshman have a job waiting after college. One significant difference between scholarship levels was found, whereas those on full scholarships more often planned to become a professional athlete. On a small scale, a progression of identity development, from that of an "athlete" during their early years of college to more of a "student" during their final college years was found. These findings affirm some previous research on student athletes, while adding to the knowledge base by having included student athletes from all sports and collecting data regarding service usage. Overall, this study shows that student athletes as a whole do not have severe academic or identity challenges, and are able to choose majors and careers of interests.
