In this dissertation, I examine the role of Florence and Florentine ideologies within Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron. I begin by situating my study within contemporary critical scholarship on medieval geography and mapping. Chapter one argues that Florence dominates the Decameron's landscape, not only physically as the setting of the cornice and many of the novelle, but also intellectually. Boccaccio develops his fiction as part of an on-going reflection on the city's history and contemporary society in a multifaceted way that includes its vernacular traditions, its flourishing mercantile culture and its republican ideals. Each chapter develops a different one of these major ideological touchstones in Boccaccio's thought and considers it in the context of his other works. Using Boccaccio's discussion on Paolo and Francesca in Esposizioni V as a starting point, chapter two argues that the Decameron rewrites the dolce stil novo concepts of love and a gentle heart, situating itself within the Florentine vernacular tradition as part of a larger defense of the literary love tradition and the morality of literature. Chapter three reevaluates the mercantile ethos of the Decameron by showing its continuity with the criticisms of merchants and bankers that Boccaccio makes in The Genealogy of the Gods, the Elegia di Madonna Fiammetta and Il Corbaccio. My comparative analysis of the tales of Alessandro (II.3) and Tedaldo degli Elisei (III.7) shows that the Decameron is deeply ambivalent toward mercantilism, aligning it with the increased materialism and instability of Florentine society. The nostalgia for an ideal Florentine past in Day VI reflects this ambivalence toward the changes to the city. The Decameron's interest in promoting republican values becomes particularly clear in the tales set in Rome, a central place in the medieval imagination, but on the peripheries of the Decameron. Boccaccio's treatment of Rome is largely consistent with the arguments that he later makes in De Casibus virorum illlustrium: while the ancient Roman republic is offered as a model for citizenship in the tale of Titus and Gisippus (X) for Florence to emulate, the contemporary city functions more as an example of the reversibility of fortune. The fifth chapter returns to Florence for a discussion of the civic ideology of the brigata, whose escape from the 1348 plague becomes the occasion for reconstructing its social order with their own government and reflecting upon it through their tales. The concluding chapter examines the Calandrino cycle as a carnivalesque reflection upon Florence, its customs and its values, making them a source of healing laughter for the brigata and for the reader.

"Addressing herself equally to those who argue for proto-feminist Boccaccio - a quasi-liberal champion of women's autonomy - and to those who argue for a positivistically secure, historical Boccaccio who could not possibly anticipate the concerns of the twenty-first century, Migiel challenges readers to pay attention to Boccaccio's language, to his pronouns, his passives, his patterns of repetition, and his figurative language. She argues that human experience, particularly in the sexual realm, is articulated differently by the Decameron's male and female narrators, and refutes the notion that the Decameron offers an undifferentiated celebration of Eros. Ultimately, Migiel contends, the stories of the Decameron suggest that as women become more empowered, the limitations on them, including the threat of violence, become more insistent."--Jacket.

That resistance, informed by a model of literary influence grounded on the idea of interruption, would keep the Canterbury Tales away from the Decameron, though not the rest of Chaucer from other works by Boccaccio. In the end, of course, that resistance tells us more about Chaucer's reception since the fifteenth century than about Chaucer himself or his sources."--BOOK JACKET.
