The Illuminated Table, the Prosperous House brings together fourteen articles by researchers from Turkey and a number of European countries such as France, Germany and Poland. These articles deal with two of the major aspects of material culture, namely food and drink on the one hand, and housing on the other. In no society is it indifferent how people eat and drink, dress and dwell; to the contrary these matters are always highly charged on the symbolic level. Ottoman society had achieved a high degree of coherence in many of its aspects, including material culture. Viewed from the opposite angle, this common material culture may count as one of the indicators that made the empire''s remarkably uniform social structure apparent even to the casual viewer. From Sarajevo to Damascus, coffee was drunk from the same kinds of cups, while everywhere, people received their friends seated on raised platforms decked out with rugs and cushions. Moreover the slow and therefore less obvious changes in material culture often had a more profound impact on people''s lives than short-term and more ''noisy'' political conflicts. The transition of the Ottomans from the world of early modern statehood toward modernity was backed up by multiple transformations in the everyday lives of many men and women. Overall, the urban populations of the empire from the sixteenth century onwards developed an increasing degree of sophistication and differentiation in their ways of living. People found new ways of enjoying their food, putting together their domestic environments or presenting themselves in public. During the last few decades the various remnants of Ottoman material life have attracted growing public attention. Ottoman cuisine and vernacular architecture are cherished not only by experts, but also by Turkish urban dwellers increasingly proud of their cultural heritage, to say nothing of tourists. But even so, serious research in these matters has been slow to develop. It is the aim of the present volume to show what avenues research has taken to date, point out the numerous unexploited or under-exploited primary sources and thus to advance our understanding of this important aspect of Ottoman history. A history of the Ottoman incorporation of Arab lands that shows how gentlemanly salons shaped culture, society, and governance Historians have typically linked Ottoman imperial cohesion in the sixteenth century to the bureaucracy or the sultan’s court. In Empire of Salons, Helen Pfeifer points instead to a critical but overlooked factor: gentlemanly salons. Pfeifer demonstrates that salons—exclusive assemblies in which elite men displayed their knowledge and status—contributed as much as any formal institution to the empire’s political stability. These key laboratories of Ottoman culture, society, and politics helped men to build relationships and exchange ideas across the far-flung Ottoman lands. Pfeifer shows that salons played a central role in Syria and Egypt’s integration into the empire after the conquest of 1516–17. Pfeifer anchors her narrative in the life and network of the star scholar of sixteenth-century Damascus, Badr al-Din al-Ghazzi (d. 1577), and she reveals that Arab elites were more influential within the empire than previously recognized. Their local knowledge and scholarly expertise competed with, and occasionally even outshone, that of the most powerful officials from Istanbul. Ultimately, Ottoman culture of the era was forged collaboratively, by Arab and Turkophone actors alike. Drawing on a range of Arabic and Ottoman Turkish sources, Empire of Salons illustrates the extent to which magnificent gatherings of Ottoman gentlemen contributed to the culture and governance of empire.

Eighteenth-century consumers of the Qing and Ottoman empires had access to an increasingly diverse array of goods, from home furnishings to fashionable clothes and new foodstuffs. While this tendency was of shorter duration and intensity in the Ottoman world, some urbanites of the sultans’ realm did enjoy silks, coffee, and Chinese porcelain. By contrast, a vibrant consumer culture flourished in Qing China, where many consumers flaunted their fur coats and indulged in gourmet dining. In this first in-depth study of the ruling family of Tunisia in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Kallander investigates the palace as a site of familial and political significance. Through extensive archival research, she elucidates the domestic economy of the palace as well as the changing relationship between the ruling family of Tunis and the government, thus revealing how the private space of the palace mirrored the public political space. “Instead of viewing the period as merely a precursor to colonial occupation and the nation-state as emphasized in precolonial or nationalist histories, this narrative moves away from images of stagnation and dependency to insist upon dynamism,” Kallander explains. She delves deep into palace dynamics, comparing them to those of monarchies outside of the Ottoman Empire to find persuasive evidence of a global modernity.
