A collection of critical and theoretical essays that seek to take an in-depth look at the socio-political and historical roots of the African-German presence in today's Germany. The essays examine the African Germans and otherness, with vivid descriptions of personal accounts and observations as well as rich information about Germany's colonial history and about being black in Germany through the pre- and post-World War II era. The volume also provides personal accounts of transitional changes in African-German daily life. German racism is an everyday occurrence in the lives of African Germans, and this volume reveals how they cope with this harsh reality. Perhaps, with the exception of the old Soviet Union, no European nation has undergone the dramatic changes to its political and social landscape as has Germany. Yet few people realize how these changes have impacted on the lives of African Germans, a population of African-descended people who have lived in Germany for at least two centuries. This volume of critical essays on the African German experience seeks to establish the position culturally, politically, and socially, of the African Germans in the larger context of the historic changes that have taken place in German society. Drawing upon the analyses of some of the most significant and outstanding scholars in the field, the collection discovers the hidden history of African Germans. As such it will be of interest to scholars and researchers of modern Germany, race relations, and Black studies.

Although Germany has been a major international player in Africa ever since West Germany's readmission to international politics after 1955, surprisingly little has been written about this topic, and even less reliable knowledge has been established. This study poses the need for a review of Germany's relations with the African continent over the past decades. It challenges scholars to fill the factual gaps that characterize the state of research so far. Ulf Engel is associate professor of politics in Africa at the Institute of African Studies, University of Leipzig. Robert Kappel is professor of politics and economics at the Institute of African Studies, University of Leipzig.

This is a comprehensive and up-to-date critical examination of cultural diversity in Germanic-speaking societies. It goes beyond ethnic, religious, and gender stereotypes to show minority groups as active participants in German history rather than as passive victims. This collection of critical and theoretical essays seeks to interpret the current philosophical, aesthetic, and literary thinking about diversity in literature and language. The book is divided into four parts: literary analyses of works produced by members of minority populations, linguistic discussions and case studies of minority groups, structures and strategies of discourse and prejudice, and studies of remedies for problems of racism and discrimination. Some of the most significant writers and thinkers in the field have contributed, making this volume of critical concern to scholars and students of German, modern languages, and comparative studies.

The rich history of encounters prior to World War I between people from German-speaking parts of Europe and people of African descent has gone largely unnoticed in the historical literature—not least because Germany became a nation and engaged in colonization much later than other European nations. This volume presents intersections of Black and German history over eight centuries while mapping continuities and ruptures in Germans' perceptions of Blacks. Juxtaposing these intersections demonstrates that negative German perceptions of Blackness proceeded from nineteenth-century racial theories, and that earlier constructions of “race” were far more differentiated. The contributors present a wide range of Black–German encounters, from representations of Black saints in religious medieval art to Black Hessians fighting in the American Revolutionary War, from Cameroonian children being educated in Germany to African American agriculturalists in Germany's protectorate, Togoland. Each chapter probes individual and collective responses to these intercultural points of contact.
