J.G. Ballard is one of the most significant British writers of the contemporary period. His award-winning novels are widely studied and read, yet the appeal of Ballard's idiosyncratic, and often controversial, imagination is such that his work also enjoys something of a cult status with the reading public. The hugely successful cinematic adaptations of Empire of the Sun (Spielberg, 1987) and Crash (Cronenberg, 1996) further confirm Ballard's unique place within the literary, cultural and popular imaginations. This guide includes new critical perspectives on Ballard's major novels as well as his short stories and journalistic writing covering issues of form, narrative and experimentation. Whilst offering fresh readings of dominant and recurring themes in Ballard's writing, including history, sexuality, violence, consumer capitalism, and urban space, the contributors also explore Ballard's contribution to major contemporary debates including those surrounding post 9/11 politics, terrorism, neo-imperialism, science, morality and ethics.

Spectres Of Pessimism written by Mark Schmitt and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-03-15 with Philosophy categories.

This book argues that philosophical pessimism can offer vital impulses for contemporary cultural studies. Pessimist thought offers ways to interrogate notions of temporality, progress and futurity. When the horizon of future expectation is increasingly shaped by the prospect of apocalypse and extinction, an exploration of pessimist thought can help to make sense of an increasingly complex and uncertain world by affirming rather than suppressing the worst. This book argues that a cultural logic of the worst is at work in a substantial section of contemporary philosophical thought and cultural representations. Spectres of pessimism can be found in contemporary ecocritical thought, antinatalist philosophies, political thought, and cultural theory, as well as in literature, film, and popular music. In its unsettling of temporality, this new pessimism shares sensibilities with the field of hauntology. Both deconstruct linear narratives of time that adhere to a stable sequence of past, present and future. Mark Schmitt therefore couples pessimism and hauntology to explore the spectres of pessimism in a range of theories and narratives—from ecocriticism, antinatalism and queer theory to utopianism, from afropessimism to the fiction of Hari Kunzru and Thomas Ligotti to the films of Camille Griffin, Gaspar Noé, Denis Villeneuve and Lars von Trier.

It’s Silence, Soundly, It’s Nothing, Seriously and It’s Absence, Presently, continue The ‘It’ Series published by Matador since The Book of It (2010). They constitute another stage in an artistic journey exploring the visual and audial dialectic of mark, word and image that began over 25 years ago. In their aesthetic form the books are a decentred trilogy united together in a new concept of The Bibliograph. All three present this new aesthetic object, which transcends the narrow limits of the academic bibliography. The alphabetical works also share a tripartite structure and identical length. The Bibliograph itself is characterised by its strategic place within each book as a whole as well as by the complex variations in meaning of the dominant motifs – nothing/ness, absence and silence – which recur throughout the alphabetical entries that constitute the elements of each text. It’s Nothing, Seriously, for example, addresses the amusing paradox that so much continues to be written today about – nothing! The aleatory character of the entries in the texts encourage the modern reader to reflect on each theme and to read them in a new way. The reader is invited as well to examine their various inter-textual relations across given conventional boundaries in the arts and sciences at several levels of physical, psychical & social reproduction.

In a decade that has seen the rise of far-right extremism, Western countries still face myriad threats of mass violence, including terrorism. Of particular concern is the phenomenon of “lone-wolf terrorism,” whereby acts of political violence are committed by individuals who are operating independently of any organized terrorist group, something which makes them inherently more difficult to identify in advance of an attack. Now there is a need for research that profiles these perpetrators, explores the incidents that occur, and analyzes the shifting changes in mass violence, technology, and terrorist behavior in modern times. Mitigating Mass Violence and Managing Threats in Contemporary Society explores the shifting definitions and implications of mass violence and covers important areas focused on the individuals who partake in these acts as well as weapon choice and the influence of weapon accessibility, how the attention-seeking behavior and promotion of violent actions is evolving, and how technology is used such as disseminating a manifesto prior to the incidents or using live streaming to broadcast incidents of mass violence as they transpire. The book also examines ways to prevent these incidents before they occur, which is a proven challenge with no single accurate profile for offenders, and whether perpetrators of mass violence share similar goals and motivations for their sprees, as well as commonalities in warning behaviors. This comprehensive research work is essential for law enforcement, military officials, defense specialists, national security experts, criminologists, psychologists, government officials, policymakers, lawmakers, professionals, practitioners, academicians, students, and researchers working in the fields of conflict analysis and resolution, crisis management, law enforcement, mental health, education, psychology, sociology, criminology, criminal justice, terrorism, and other social sciences.
