The year 1913 is referred to as the beginning of the age of modernism when the Amory Show took place in New York in March 1913. It was the first large exhibition that showed modern art in the U.S., which was radical art in contrast to American standards. The time of modernism brought about the development of new inventions like radio broadcasting, the rise of motion pictures, mass production and the spread of consumerism, automobiles and aviation. Due to these inventions, the economic, social and political conditions changed and also literature was affected by these changes of society. Modernism as a literary movement caused a fundamental break with traditional modes of western art, concerning religion, social conventions and morality. It is an artistic movement that was characterized by its "sense of engagement with ideas of the 'new'" (Armstrong 2005, 24). This term paper deals with the Imagist movement that came into being in 1912, and which is part of the modernist movement. The term paper further deals with Hilda Doolittle's place within the Imagist movement and her poem Sea Rose.

Sea Garden By H. D. Hilda "H.D." Doolittle (September 10, 1886 - September 27, 1961) was an American poet, novelist, and memoirist known for her association with the early 20th century avant-garde Imagist group of poets such as Ezra Pound and Richard Aldington. She published under the pen name of H.D. H.D. was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in 1886 and moved to London in 1911, where her publications earned her a central role within the then emerging Imagist movement. A charismatic figure, she was championed by the modernist poet Ezra Pound, who was instrumental in building and furthering her career. From 1916-17, she acted as the literary editor of the Egoist journal, while her poetry appeared in the English Review and the Transatlantic Review. During the First World War, H.D. suffered the death of her brother and the breakup of her marriage to the poet Richard Aldington, and these events weighed heavily on her later poetry. Glenn Hughes, an authority on Imagism, wrote that 'her loneliness cries out from her poems'. She had a deep interest in Ancient Greek literature, and her poetry often borrowed from Greek mythology and classical poets. Her work is noted for its incorporation of natural scenes and objects, which are often used to emote a particular feeling or mood. "The creator of the new composition in the arts is an outlaw until he is a classic", Gertrude Stein wrote in 1926. Unlike male modernists such as T. S. Eliot or Ezra Pound, the modernist women poets Edith Sitwell, Amy Lowell, Stein and H. D. never became "high" modernist models but remained "artistic outlaws". The present study shows how these women were present on the modernist scene but followed their own concepts and struggled to establish their position as modernist women poets. [Hilda Doolittle] (1886-1961) was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and her family moved to Upper Darby when she was a child, She became friends with Ezra Pound as a teenager, began writing poetry, and briefly attended Bryn Mawr College, where she first explored her bisexuality, and met fellow poets Marianne Moore and William Carlos Williams. Pound moved to London in 1908, followed by Doolittle in 1911, and they became close with the poet, Richard Aldington. Are you alive? I touch you. You quiver like a sea-fish. I cover you with my net. Together they began writing 'free verse' at a time when English-language poetry was almost exclusively metered and rhymed, calling their work 'Imagiste' (after the 'School of Images', active 1908-1909). Though Doolittle's first poems were published due to Pound's influence, his dictatorial approach to poetics led to a split in the group, with Amy Lowell leading the 'new' lmagists, now including Doolittle, Aldington, John Gould Fletcher, D.H. Lawrence, and F.S. Flint (a founding member of the earlier Imagist group). They would go on to oversee the publication of 3 Imagist anthologies between 1915-1917, highly influential on the post-1913 'new verse' and 'free verse' movements which blossomed in their wake.
