This paper investigates the effect of undernourishment on economic growth. In addition to the basic relationship on health, a number of other important relationships are investigated: (a) regional differences regarding the impact of under-nourishment on growth; (b) the impact that possible errors in measuring nutritional variables may have on the robustness of the estimated nutrition-growth relationship; and (c) the existence of "nutritional traps", i.e. the vicious circle of low nutrition-low economic growth-low nutrition. The basic conclusion of the paper - that undernourishment can be a serious handicap in the efforts of countries to achieve economic growth - suggests that actions taken to feed the hungry have a strong growth dimension in addition to their humanitarian character.

The incidence of malnutrition and its prevalence in the poor economies of the world is shocking. Globally, malnutrition affects more than 2.3 billion people. Additionally, 928 million more to 2.3 billion people are expected to be undernourished. Of these, 2 billion lack sufficient vitamins and minerals, 149 million children under five are underweight, and 45 million more are wasting. This paper shows the impact and relationship economic development has on Nutrition in sub-Saharan Africa--a more important agenda for resolution and significance for sub-Saharan countries like Nigeria. Fifty-eight million were underweight African children under five; 13.9 million were wasting from 2016 data. As a result, non-communicable diseases like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and cancer are prevalent, and in 2017, 10.3 million children were overweight. Of the 41 countries globally that suffer from all three forms of malnutrition, 30 are in Africa.Secondary data and literature findings confirm that at least one-fifth of death and disability can be traced to nutrition issues. Multi-sectoral policies, such as gender, agriculture, social protection, early childhood development, and education, are needed to achieve nutrition security, SDGs, and Africa's social and economic development. Measures to improve health and Nutrition can be considered a pro-poor step, assisting in increasing the GDP per capita. A requirement is that a holistic approach of several policy actions on the demand and supply side is put in place. In the fight against undernutrition, a capable strategy is to bring African countries back to the path of economic growth (EDIs) they left in the 1970s.

This document summarizes published and grey literature on conceptual framework on the link between child nutrition and economic growth, determinants of child undernutrition, types of investments to enhance maternal and child nutrition, and linkages between urbanization and child nutrition. Several in-sights emerge from the review. First, and despite progresses over the last several decades, maternal and child malnutrition is still prevalent in developing countries and the progress has been uneven. While the percentage of chronically malnourished (stunted) children declined across the developing world, the number of stunted children in Africa increased due to slower reduction in stunting prevalence and population growth. Many developing countries are experiencing the coexistence of different forms of malnutrition including undernutrition, micronutrient deficiency, and overnutrition. Second, child undernutrition, especially stunting during the first 1,000 days of life, has several short- and long-term effects on individuals and economies that include impaired cognitive and non-cognitive development, poor educational performance, low productivity and earnings, and higher healthcare costs. Third, the determinants of child undernutrition are broadly classified as the immediate determinants including dietary intake and diseases; the underlying determinants that include household food security, quality of care and household living environment, and access to healthcare; and the basic determinants that include access to productive resources, stock of capital, as well as socioeconomic, political and cultural factors. Investments to enhance child nutrition can target either the immediate determinants (known as nutrition-specific investments) or the underlying determinants (known as nutrition-sensitive investments). Fourth, the effect of urbanization on child nutrition is mostly determined by the extent to which urban settlements offer their residents with better economic opportunities (e.g., better paying jobs and markets for nutritious food) and services (e.g., healthier living environments). Fifth, given the multilayer causes of child undernutrition, a multi-sectoral approach is needed to address the various determinants of undernutrition to improve maternal nutrition, promote optimal infant and young child feeding practices, enhance household food security, as well as improve healthy living environment and access to quality health care.

Egypt faces two nutritional challenges. This book’s main hypothesis is that Egypt’s large food subsidy system has been ineffective in reducing undernutrition; in fact, it may have contributed to sustaining and even aggravating both nutrition challenges. For a long time, the subsidy system provided only calorie-rich foods, at very low and constant prices and with quotas much above dietary recommendations. This system has created incentives to consume calorie-overladen and unbalanced diets, increasing the risks of child and maternal overnutrition and, at high subsidy levels, the risk of inadequate child nutrition. Moreover, the large public budget allocated to the food subsidies is unavailable for possibly more nutrition-beneficial spending, such as for child and maternal nutrition-specific interventions. The authors’ findings consistently suggest that—in addition to the well-known economic rationale for reforming the Egyptian food subsidy system—there are strong reasons to reform food subsidies due to nutrition and public health concerns. A fundamental food subsidy reform process has been under way since June 2014. The already-implemented changes can be expected to have reduced some incentives for overconsumption and may have positive dietary effects. However, further major reform efforts are needed to transform the current subsidy system into a key policy instrument in the fight against malnutrition. The findings of this book should be valuable to policy makers, analysts, development partners, and others concerned with improving food security and promoting healthy nutrition in Egypt and other developing countries with large social protection programs.
