The Indian two-wheeler industry has undergone a long journey since its humble beginning in the late 1940s. During these eventful years, it has experienced great advancements in technology, tremendous increments in production volume and opening up of the market for global trade. India has now emerged as a global leader in two-wheeler production and trade. A key factor behind the creditable progress of this industry has been the operation of several international joint ventures (IJVs) such as Kawasaki Bajaj, TVS Suzuki, Kinetic Honda and Hero Honda. Of all IJVs, the partnership between Hero and Honda has been the longest and perhaps the most remarkable too. This article gives a brief overview of the Indian two-wheeler industry and presents a glimpse of the IJVs therein. It analyzes the impact of Hero Honda case, in detail, to showcase how a local manufacturer can team up with a global player and still achieve a synergy between their core competencies for enhancing efficiency, productivity and quality. The article narrates the transition from interfirm competition to cooperation and aims at finding out how management innovations by both the partners can help reduce conflicts of interest, avoid cannibalization of the products of individual firms and derive mutual benefits by aligning their individual targets to a common goal of market success.

International Joint Ventures: Economic and Organizational Perspectives is the result of a symposium on International Joint Ventures and Strategic Alliances held by the Center for Research in Conflict and Negotiation at Pennsylvania State University. The book gives a cross-disciplinary treatment of the economic and managerial issues affecting joint venture formation, operation and performance, including subjects ranging from the impact of international trade policy to cross-cultural communication on joint venture operations. The volume enriches our understanding of each discipline from the vantage point of the other, building a more complete understanding of joint ventures as a mode of entry into domestic and international markets. Two categories of question are analyzed: issues of importance to the joint potential and actual participants in a joint venture, and issues related to the social effects of joint ventures from the point of view of society as a whole or its agent, the regulator. The questions are addressed using simple theoretical models and conceptual discussions as well as empirical analyses. Audience: Executives, policy makers and scholars of economics, decision analysis, political science and management.

Business groups in emerging economies frequently use international joint ventures (IJV) as a channel for knowledge acquisition and technology advancement. While IJVs provide a business group with access to new technology, how successful a group is in exploiting that new knowledge for innovative purposes depends on the groups' ability to recombine new knowledge with its existing pool of knowledge and resources. The more resources a group spends in forming IJVs with foreign partners, the less resources the group has in developing and sustaining organizational mechanisms that facilitate integration of existing ideas and resources. Following this theoretical duality, we view the IJV - innovation relationship not as an “either - or” question, but as a question of whether and how. Specifically, viewing business groups as networks of loosely coupled firms,we examine howintra-group network structure and evolving institutional environment moderates the IJV - patenting relationship in Taiwan between 1981 and 1998.

International joint ventures are usually instigated as a means to provide opportunities for each partner to gain access to, acquire and adapt existing knowledge and develop new knowledge. In Malaysia, the creation of international joint ventures is an important vehicle for expansion in its developing economy. Little research has addressed factors affecting the performance of such ventures in emerging South East Asian economies such as Malaysia. This research seeks to evaluate using variables of articulated goals, absorptive capacity, parent assistance, trust and cultural conflict ndash; the performance of joint ventures between Malaysian Government-Linked Companies (GLCS) and foreign firms. A survey of expatriate and local managers at selected firms helps to assess the impact of joint ventures on the firm's performance. This research concludes that while the Malaysian government's role in promoting joint venture initiatives continues, and notwithstanding diminished importance, it is vital for government-linked companies to remain competitive in order to enhance the effectiveness of joint ventures as a vehicle for Malaysian economic development.

'This is a welcome addition to the body of work on IJV performance. The emphasis on marketing and on S.E. Asia is particularly timely.' - Paul Beamish, University of Western Ontario, Canada Craig Julian argues that the International Joint Venture (IJV) phenomena represents two opposing trends. On the one hand, an analysis of the number of new IJVs reveals that they are becoming increasingly popular as a mode of overseas market entry and expansion. On the other hand, however, the significance of a robust growth trend is overshadowed by the incidence of high failure. The book examines the factors influencing the marketing performance of IJVs in South East Asia, including market characteristics, conflict, commitment, product characteristics, marketing orientation, control, trust, partner's contributions and partner's needs.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: A (95% of 100%), The American Central University, language: English, abstract: Since 1978, Deng Xiaoping succeeded to launch his economic reform program “Open Door” policy that encouraged foreign investments. It was the beginning of a new era for China. Deng’s idea was to open China to foreign investments in order to acquire resources, such as technology, expertise knowledge, etc... Deng promoted a socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics. It means that a market economy with decentralized public investment and a socialist framework of the society. However, he changed the political system as well, decentralized economic decision-making, and began legal and bureaucratic reforms. Chinese economy has experienced significant growth. There is no doubt that this economics expansion has been a direct result of Deng Xiaopeng’s “open door” policy. Foreign investments have rapidly increased and more factories were established by offering tax privileges, such as reduced import tariffs or tax exemptions for certain imports amongst others. In fact, among the developing countries, China is currently the one that attracts the most foreign investments. Joining the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001, China pushed this development even further.

In the 1980s, the Communist government in China sought to accelerate economic growth and institute economic reforms by increasing productivity and introducing free enterprises and free markets. Requiring foreign capital, a system for joint ventures was established to allow foreign companies to form partnerships with Chinese firms in a variety of business and production activities. This work examines the legal, business, and practical issues involved in undertaking and maintaining joint ventures in the People's Republic of China, offering guidance on the laws, regulations, and procedures governing such ventures, and the effect of the Tianamen Square incident on these business vehicles. The work is divided into six chapters, each addressing a different aspect of joint ventures. Chapter 1 places the subject into a historical context, tracing how these ventures emerged as a part of economic reform and what guidelines were established to ensure their value to both participants. Chapter 2 details the methods by which the government translated the ideas and policies into national and local legislation, and lists and explains a few basic statutes. The procedure for establishing a joint venture is fully described in chapter 3, from finding a Chinese firm to sharing the profits and eventually dissolving the partnership. Chapter 4 explores the nature, activities, and success of joint ventures from 1979 to 1987, while Chapter 5 focuses on the Tianamen Square incident and the shift in government policy that followed it. A final chapter provides summary observations on the investment environment in China and the impact of joint ventures on the country's economy. This book will be an essential reference source for courses in international finance and trade, Asian and Chinese studies, and development economics, as well as for finance professionals involved in multinational enterprises. Public and academic libraries will also find it to be a useful addition to their collections.

Corporate governance, namely the relationship between the ownership and control of firms, takes on new dimensions in the case of international joint ventures operating in the special context of China. The present study contributes a new examination of this relationship, firstly through its conceptual refinement, and secondly through original empirical research. It develops the concept of ownership as suited to joint ventures, in which account is taken of non-capital resourcing by foreign and Chinese partners.
