Our economy is a huge complex system composed of many actors including individuals, firms, cities, and governments. These agents interact with each other, and those interactions produce complex economic phenomena, including innovations, booms, and recessions. These complex interactions are accelerated by the recent advancement in information technology, as the new information technology is driving the global economy to be more knowledge- and information-oriented. How will these new communication and information technologies restructure our working lives and the landscape of our labor market? This dissertation aims to answer questions about the impact of new technological advancements on our economy and its structure. I propose three research questions, each of which delves into the impact of the new information and communication technologies on the labor market at different levels 0́4 the career of individual workers, the structure of the global economy, and the occupational composition dynamics of an industry. For individual workers, how do these new communication technologies influence their career development? At a macroscopic level, how do these information technologies change the structure of our economy? Furthermore, how do they affect the distribution pattern of jobs across different regions? Answering the questions may allow us to see the big picture about how the current economy is structured and how it is changed by the new technologies.
