Abstract: Research investigating the impact of religion and religiosity on aggression and prosocial behavior is mixed. The reason for these inconsistent results may be due to the multifaceted nature of religion. This study was the first to investigate both the impact of different aspects of religion (e.g., spirituality, institutional religion, good and evil supernatural agents, etc.) as well as views of God as punitive on subsequent aggressive behavior. Results indicated that more punitive perceptions of God were correlated with lower levels of aggression. Furthermore, there was a marginal interaction between religious orientation and type of religious priming. Although simple effects and subsequent post-hoc tests did not reach standard levels of statistical significance, the direction of the effect for Christian participants was that priming with evil supernatural agents reduced aggressive behavior but this trend was in the opposite direction for non-Christians.

Previous empirical research has suggested differential effects of religion to promote passivity as well as aggression. While some studies emphasize the role of religion to promote pacifism, additional research indicates that religion may induce aggressive behavior. A moderating mechanism that may partially explain such a dichotomy is the ability of religious texts to media prime either passivity or aggression. The purpose of the present experiment was to assess the effects of media priming via representative religious texts from the Abrahamic Religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) on inducing state aggression. Individuals (n= 35) from the specific Abrahamic Religions received online survey materials that included scriptural texts from their respective Abrahamic Religion as well as a modified version of the State Trait Anger Expression Inventory Version 2 (STAXI-2) that indexed state aggression. Through their indication of birth month on the online survey material, participants were randomly assigned to one of three text type conditions. In one text type condition, participants were exposed to religious texts representative of their religion that media primed aggression. In another text type condition, participants were exposed to religious texts that media primed passivity and nonaggression. In a third and final condition (control), participants were exposed to nonreligious texts that primed neither state aggression nor passivity. In each condition, state aggression via STAXI-2 subscale was assessed. The results revealed that media priming state aggression using religious texts neither significantly increased nor decreased state aggression. In spite of these negative results, multiple sampling issues as well as potential biases may have contributed to the present findings.
