Despite the Holocaust's profound impact on the history of Eastern Europe, the communist regimes successfully repressed public discourse about and memory of this tragedy. Since the collapse of communism in 1989, however, this has changed. In the face of strong moral and aesthetic pressure to deal with the Holocaust in strictly historical and documentary modes, this book discusses why and how reenactment of the Holocaust in art and imaginative literature can be successful in simultaneously presenting, analyzing, and working through this apocalyptic moment in human history. In pursuing his argument, the author explores such diverse materials and themes as: the testimonies of Holocaust survivors; the works of such artists and writers as Charlotte Salomon, Christian Boltanski, and Armando; and the question of what it means to live in a house built by a jew who was later transported to the death camps. He shows that reenactment, as an artistic project, also functions as a critical strategy, one that, unlike historical methods requiring a mediator, speaks directly to us and lures us into the Holocaust. We are then placed in the position of experiencing and being the subjects of that history. We are there, and history is present--but not quite. A confrontation with Nazism or with the Holocaust by means of a re-enactment takes place within the representational realm of art. Our access to this past is no longer mediated by the account of a witness, by a narrator, by the eye of a photographer. We do not respond to a re-presentation of the historical event, but to a presentation or performance of it, and our response is direct or firsthand in a different way. That different way of "keeping in touch is the subject of inquiry that propels this study.

The Holocaust is the most researched and written about genocide in history. Known facts should be beyond dispute. Yet Holocaust memory is often formed and dictated by governments and others with an agenda to fulfil, or by deniers who seek to rewrite the past due to vested interests and avowed prejudices. Legislation can be used to prosecute hate crime and genocide denial, but it has also been created to protect the reputation of nation states and the inhabitants of countries previously occupied and oppressed by the regime of Nazi Germany. The crimes of the Holocaust are, of course, rightly seen mainly as the work of the Nazi regime, but there is a reality that some citizens of subjugated lands participated in, colluded and collaborated with those crimes, and on occasion committed crimes and atrocities against Jews independently of the Nazis. Others facilitated and enabled the Nazis by allowing industries to work with the Germans; some showed hostility, indifference and reluctance to assist Jewish refugees, or, due to antipathy, apathy, greed, self-interest or out-and-out anti-Semitism they allowed or even encouraged barbaric and cruel crimes to take place. Survivors of the Holocaust often express a primary desire that lessons of the past must be learned in order to reduce the risk of similar crimes reoccurring. Yet anti-Semitism is still a toxin in the modern world, and racism and hostility to other communities – including those who suffer in or have fled war and oppression – can at times appear normalised and socially acceptable. This book seeks to explore aspects of the Holocaust as it is remembered and reflect ultimately on parallels with the world we live in today.

This volume examines the long-term consequences of the Holocaust on survivors and their children some four decades after the war. This book represents the culmination of nine years of collaborative effort, consisting primarily of findings drawn from two sample surveys of Jewish residents in Montreal. This volume covers new research topics that have been neglected in the survivor literature, including personality, familial interactions, vocational achievements, sociopolitical attitudes. an excellent source of material from a sociopolitical and psychological perspective. The assessment of the impact of a political movement on the attitudes and psychological status of a minority population is informative. The study of a large group of Holocaust survivors adds significantly to the scientific literature in this area. Contemporary Psychology The first empirical study of the psychological consequences of the Holocaust across three generations, this book assesses the long-term and intergenerational effects of severe victimization and of other forms of exposure to excessive, prolonged stress. Although there can be no doubt that there are negative psychological and physical consequences for the survivors of the Holocaust, the authors present evidence here that contradicts the dominant thrust of previous studies, which emphasized dysfunction in the family life of survivors and psychological impairment in their children. In addition to an intensive study of Holocaust survivors and their families, this book provides a yardstick against which the long-term and cross-generational impact of other potentially traumatic situations--war, earthquakes, flood, fire, assault, and so on--may be measured. The authors' research for this volume spans the disciplines of psychology, psychiatry, sociology, history, and ethnic studies. The book, however, is written in an accessible style easily understood by the nonprofessional reader.
