Violence is one of the most important challenges, not only for public health systems, but also for public mental health. Violence can have immediate as well as long-term and even transgenerational effects on the mental health of its victims. This book provides a comprehensive and wide-ranging assessment of the mental health legacy left by violence. It addresses the issues as they affect states, communities and families, in other words at macro-, meso- and microlevels, beginning by describing the impact of violence on neurobiology and mental health, as well as the spectrum of syndromes and disorders associated with different forms of violence. The work moves on to tackle violence at the international—and intranational—level before zeroing in on the nature of violence in communities such as villages or city districts. It also examines the results of violence in the family. Each type of violence has distinct effects on mental health and in each chapter specific groups are explored in depth to demonstrate the heterogeneity of violence as well as the diversity of its outcomes in the realm of public mental health. Finally, the book addresses the notion of ‘undoing violence’ by detailing case studies of effective interventions and prevention occurring in countries, communities and families. These cases give us pause to reflect on the nature of resilience and dignity in the context of violence and mental health. All the chapters have been written by leading authors in the field and provide a state-of-the-art perspective. The authors, from different fields of expertise, facilitate interdisciplinary and international insights into the impact of violence on mental health.

Literature on family violence is constantly being updated and areas of research are being expanded as, step by step, more is learned about the nature and breadth of this issue. This document is meant to be a resource both for those people interested in an overview of the subject and for those interested in investigating particular research areas. For example, students and other academics may find this guide useful as a resource for their courses and research. Health and social service providers, self-help groups or concerned individuals may similarly be interested. Researchers into family violence, on the other hand, may find this resource useful in revealing findings from the practice setting. A substantial part of this literature was developed as a direct outcome of the numerous projects funded under the Family Violence Initiative of the federal government.

More than 1 billion children - half of all children in the world - are exposed to violence every year, in many forms and places, online and off. Whether a target or a witness, a child's exposure to violence has a severe impact on mental health. Such experiences with violence are often traumatic, evoking toxic responses to stress that cause both immediate and longterm physiological and psychological damage, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, borderline personality disorder, anxiety, substance use disorders, sleep and eating disorders, and suicide. As the international community begins a Decade of Action to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, mental health must be imperative to measures employed to prevent and respond to violence against children and fulfill the promises of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. In support of that process, this publication provides an overview of international evidence on the ways in which violence harms children's mental health, considering both diverse settings and forms of violence, developmental differences in the aftermath, and the most significant risk and protective factors. Highlighting the urgent need for action alongside continued gaps in knowledge of worthwhile solutions, the report also offers existing, effective approaches that should be pursued.

Domestic violence (also referred to as family or intimate partner violence) is a public health problem that continues to affect the lives of individuals of all backgrounds, with women and children being the most common victims of acts of physical, psychological, and sexual violence. Longstanding research has recognized the mental health sequelae of domestic violence and the potential role of social, economic, and environmental factors. The COVID-19 pandemic has not only heightened the risk of domestic violence, but called for greater awareness of the need for efforts to address this public health concern, especially under extreme circumstances of social isolation. Consisting of 11 chapters, this reprint addresses the mental health correlates of domestic violence among various populations globally, the impact of COVID-19 on victims of violence, and potential preventative and intervention measures to address domestic violence in communities. Overall, the reprint draws attention to the impact of domestic violence on the health and well-being of individuals while recognizing possible solutions to address this public health concern.
