Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 10: August, 1907 The Doctrine and Covenants is uniform in purpose and defin ite in doctrine, - teaching us how to live and sanctify our bodies, establishing the genuine system of divine religion, by which we may measure our steps with assurance of salvation and reward for individual effort. Instead of infant damnation, we have infant purity and salvation through the blood of Christ. Little children are pure, - of such is the kingdom of heaven. We do not believe that men will be punished for Adam's transgression, that men are destined to be saved or lost irrespective of worthiness and obedience, that men will be saved by faith or grace alone, or that the principles of the gospel are temporal and evolutionary. We do not believe that men can obtain the authority of the priest hood by scholastic or reverential training, or that they can assume the role of self-appointment by usurping the authority of the apostles of old, - repudiating God's right and power to reveal him self or minister to the children of men. Excerpt from The Improvement Era, Vol. 10: March, 1907 The voyage after leaving Sidon, which place they reached on the day following their embarkation at Caesarea, was, as we find recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, very unpropitious, storms and counter winds succeeding one another to such an extent as to greatly retard the ship's progress. Arriving at length at Myra, the then capital of Lycia, Julius the centurion found an Alexan drian corn ship sailing to Italy in which he secured accommodation for his prisoners and their escort. Ba iing gales and heavy seas continued apparently to accompany the party, until at' length the series of dangers through which they had to pass culminated in the total wreck of their ship on a cold and dismal morning in the month of November, A. D. 60, on the wild coast of the island of Melita (malta). Fortunately, not one of the two hundred and seventy-six souls on board was lost. In that island they were compelled to remain for the space of three months, during which time Paul healed the father of Publius, the chief man /of the place, and cured also many others who were diseased and af icted in various ways. Here it was that he shook off into the fire the venomous viper that had fastened onto his hand as he was gathering sticks, and yet received no harm there from. (acts xxviii.
