Excerpt from The Indebtedness of Samuel Taylor Coleridge to August Wilhelm Von Schlegel Ferrier ridicules particularly the penultimate sentence of Cole ridge's defense in which he deprecates the charge of plagiarism, and, at the same time, attempts to make a sort of compact with the world whereby he shall be privileged to take all he wishes from Schelling without acknowledgment. He does not think any man has the right to enter such a plea as the above. SO long as these plagiarisms are undetected, this manner of wording the protest will insure to the author, (as it did to Coleridge during the whole of his life), the credit of being original, and when they are detected, (if that ever happens), it will give him the benefit of his protestation as a defense. The result is that the general reader will conclude that nothing could be further from Cole ridge 's intention than plagiarism. Since Coleridge mentions Schlegel in his defense in the same terms as Schelling, Ferrier argues, without investigation, that. Shakespeare, the Renaissance and Empire: Poetry, Philosophy and Politics is the second volume of this study and builds on the first, which concentrated on related matters, including geography and language. In both volumes, a key focus is close analysis of the text and an attention to Shakespeare’s use of signs, verbal and visual, to represent the world in poetry and prose, in dramatic and non-dramatic work as well as some of the contexts before, during and after the Renaissance. Shakespeare’s representation of character and action in poetry and theatre, his interpretation and subsequent interpretations of him are central to the book as seen through these topics: German Shakespeare, a life and no life, aesthetics and ethics, liberty and tyranny, philosophy and poetry, theory and practice, image and text. The book also explores the typology of then and now, local and global.

This book examines the development of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s intellectual legacy in Britain and America from 1834 to 1934 by focusing on his late role as the Sage of Highgate and his programme of educating young minds who were destined for the higher professions (particularly preaching and teaching). Chapters assess his pedagogy and his late publications, his posthumous reputation, and his influence on aesthetics, theology, philosophy, politics and social reform. The book discusses a wide range of British and American intellectuals, including Thomas and Matthew Arnold, F. D. Maurice, John Stuart Mill, Henry Sidgwick, Shadworth Hodgson, T. H. Green, James Marsh, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Horace Bushnell, William James and John Dewey. It demonstrates how Coleridgean ideas were developed and distorted into something he would never have recognized as his own and emphasizes his significance as a catalyst who played a vital role in shaping the intellectual vocation of the long nineteenth century.
