The arrival of Vasco da Gama on the western coast of India; near Calicut; on 27 May 1498; heralded the restoration of Europe’s links with the subcontinent after an interval of almost eight centuries. With his landing; India became accessible to Portuguese conquistadors; traders; travellers; scholars and clergymen. The sixteenth century could; in a sense; be termed the Portuguese century; for no European power could challenge its mastery of the sea route to India. The defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 by Holland and England; however; signaled the end of this monopoly and in 1595; the first Dutch fleet entered the Indian Ocean. In the seventeenth century; the Dutch; with their British camp followers; seriously undermined the Portuguese. The French also entered the Indian trade in the second half of this century. While several Portuguese accounts of India in the sixteenth century are available; for the seventeenth century; we also have the writings of travellers; scholars and missionaries from the latter three countries. Additionally; Jesuits of various nationalities wrote regular letters to home; providing valuable information on facets of Indian life; albeit tempered by their religious bias. This volume confines itself to European writings of sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It does not claim to be exhaustive but presents glimpses of the Indian reality as recorded by contemporary European visitors. Only English translations have been used. A sizeable number of accounts in European languages still await translation. • The king (ruler or administrator) should fix a time for his meals. Normally, he should not alter them. A king (administrator) must not consume intoxicants. He should also not permit persons close to him to indulge in such substances. If a king is without a weapon, he must not stare at the ground for too long. • What was the size of the personal treasury (of the leader) and the royal one while taking oath before the commencement of his task? What was the difference between both treasuries when he finally quit the scene? The difference is the measure of his financial probity and character. • Shivaji — “Kanhoji, I had promised you not to award him the sentence of death, which I have kept. But had I not punished him (Khandoji Khopda), the message that would have been conveyed to the people is that influence and contacts can trump even a crime as grave as treason. Would that have been proper for Swarajya? • It is therefore the duty of every leader to detect and isolate traitors from his system, punish him and remorselessly prevent the tendency of betrayal from developing. • Jungles in Swarajya also have plenty of mango and jackfruit trees, whose wood can be used in the building of ships, but these should not be touched, as these aren’t tress that can grow to their fullest in only a couple of years. The people have planted those trees and looked after them like their own children.

Goa transcends its image as a mere its surface lies a history steeped in bloodshed and brutality, often conveniently brushed aside due to the discomfort it elicits. This book unveils these concealed truths, revealing a historical identity of Goa rooted in Sanatan Dharma -the authentic essence of the region. Tracing back thousands of years, the chronicle unfolds the relentless suppression of this identity by Islamic and Christian invaders., the book illuminates a seldom-addressed yet crucial topic-the deliberate and systematic persecution of Hindus, the original inhabitants of Goa, which remains under-discussed even after the liberation of Goa in 1961 from colonial rule.

This pioneering volume traces the history of the region which became Indonesia, from early times to the present day, in over three hundred specially drawn full-colour maps with detailed accompanying text. In doing so, the Atlas brings fresh life to the fascinating and tangled history of this immense archipelago. Beginning with the geographical and ecological forces which have shaped the physical form of the archipelago, the Historical Atlas of Indonesia goes on to chart early human migration and the changing distribution of ethnic groups. It traces the kaleidoscopic pattern of states in early Indonesia and their gradual incorporation into the Netherlands Indies and eventually into the Republic of Indonesia.
