The Indian Ocean Nodule Field: Geology and Resource Potential, Second Edition, provides a view of the most recent studies along with classical theories starting from the 1960s. New concepts, hypotheses and critical appreciation of the state-of-the-art knowledge on nodule formation and resource management are featured in this new edition. The economy of the Indian Ocean has vast potential and yet it is one of the least studied oceans. Garnering economic advantage out of mineral resources from deep oceans has been a long cherished dream for the mining community. The availability of 5-metal rich polymetallic (manganese) nodules in specific areas of the Indian Ocean has lured researchers to discover more about their processes of formation, growth, distribution and enrichment. Collates, discusses and succinctly presents voluminous and scattered information from various books and journals for easy understanding and dissemination Features two new chapters: statistical modeling of the formation, growth, distribution and metal enrichment of nodules; and biogeochemistry of the Central Indian Ocean Basin Includes an assessment of Indian Ocean nodules, one of the least studied oceans in comparison to samples analyzed from the world’s oceans

The Indian Ocean: Basics of Marine Geology, Physics and Chemistry begins with a short introduction to the and origin of water and formation of oceans on Earth. This is followed by the history of Oceanography / Marine Sciences, including international and Indian scenarios. In subsequent chapters marine instruments, sampling equipment, coastal features, offshore and deep-sea feature, and structures are discussed. Oceanic volcanism, formation of different rocks and geotectonics (continental drift, plate tectonics, seafloor spreading) are detailed, as these play important roles in the evolution of Earth. Sediments of the coasts and deep sea are presented in terms of their classifications, granulometry, chemical compositions and other parameters. The properties of sea water, oceanic circulation and cycling of nutrients form the crux of physical oceanography. The Indian Ocean: Basics of Marine Geology, Physics and Chemistry includes a chapter on the biology of the oceans, and their importance to sediment formation and palaeoceanography form another chapter. A chapter on mineral wealth of the coasts (near- and off-shore) and deep sea is included and contains beach sands, placer deposits, polymetallic nodules, phosphorites, hydrothermal polymetallic sulphides. In addition, the economics of mining these deposits are covered. Information related to harnessing various energies from the sea such as from tides, waves, currents and winds are incorporated. The Indian Ocean also deals with the important aspects of territorial waters, exclusive economic zones and coastal regulation zones together with international maritime laws, rules and regulations. A chapter pertaining to blue economy and green technology of the oceans are also presented. The highlight of the book is the inclusion of details, examples and photographs from Indian coasts and neighboring seas (especially Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal) and the Indian Ocean. Presents the Indian Ocean in the context of global ocean circulation and climate Includes a modern, comprehensive, coherent treatment of the Indian Ocean's physical, chemical and biological oceanography Provides examples and case studies related to India, that can also be applied elsewhere

The Indian Ocean represents a part of the global Ocean that has been less studied by modern oceanography than the Atlantic and Pacific parts. This is remarkable, since the Indian Ocean was subject to much historic exploration through navigators from Asia, India, the Middle East and lastly from Europe. This unique, comprehensive reference set on the Indian Ocean, covers all oceanographical aspects with its physics, chemistry, biology and geology in 21 peer-reviewed expert-written chapters. Besides the well-ground basis on the Ocean’s characteristics and a wealth of data, some unique features presented are the monsoon - the biennial reversal of winds and the resultant surface circulation; the tropical and sub-tropical jet streams, namely the Somali current, the Agulhas current and the Leevwin current; the oxygen-poor intermediate waters in its northern part which significantly contribute several green house gases to the atmosphere, for example, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane and dimethyl sulphide; its exhaustive coral reefs and mangrove vegetation; and the polymetallic nodules at its depths and its other mineral resources. Moreover, an analysis is provided of the anthropogenic contributions and their impacts on the health of the Indian Ocean; and that of estuary environments of important rivers of the 15 littoral countries. Intended for research scientists, professionals and students working in physical, chemical and geological oceanography.

The economic paradigms currently dominating the world are not sustainable. The threats from climate change, exploitation-based approaches to commerce, and the excess acquisition of resources loom large as well as the possibility of military flare-ups. Maintaining a balance between development and ecosystems, aspirations for growth, and the need for sustainability is a prescient challenge. The Indian Ocean Region (IOR) encompasses some of the poorest countries in the world and those that will bear the brunt of the negative impacts from climate change. This book explores the immense potential of the IOR and how best to maintain sustainable and responsible economic and strategic activities. The combination of science, innovation, and entrepreneurship will create a new blue economy business model, which has the potential to transform society. Based on critical analysis of the model and its practical applications, including risks as well as opportunities, the topics discussed range from food security, energy, and resilience to climate change, trade and investments, and improved maritime connectivity to tourism, poverty alleviation, and socioeconomic growth, encompassing a wide range of interests and expertise. FEATURES Examines the geo-politics, geo-resources, and geo-hazards of the IOR and identifies opportunities and methods to achieve success Covers a detailed assessment of available resources (fisheries, minerals, energy), threats such as pollution (plastic, acoustic, carbon, bio-invasion), geo-politics (maritime security, military invasion), and strategic vision (determining carrying capacity, ethical governance, and responsible ecosystem) of the Indian Ocean Analyzes the economics of the blue economy, the global scenario including the Pacific and Caribbean islands, and the aspect of the Chinese geo-political invasion in the Indian Ocean Inspires entrepreneurs to adopt new ways of creating economic benefits, reducing energy use, and increasing revenue while simultaneously helping the communities involved Discusses the threat and security perspectives of the IOR and the collective responsibility for a sustainable use of resources Crossing a wide range of interests and expertise, this book explores topics and ideas that will be essential to researchers and professionals in marine sciences, economics, business, geography, and political sciences. Manganese nodules were first discovered on the ocean floor 160 miles south-west of the Canary Islands on February 18, 1803, during the first complex oceano logical cruise of the Challenger. They surprised researchers by their unusual shape and also by their unusual chemical composition; nevertheless for many years after wards, they were considered merely as one of Nature's exotic marine tricks. After the Secpnd World War, a comprehensive investigation of the World Ocean started, and new data were obtained on a wide distribution of manganese nodules and their polymetallic composition, that made scientists consider nodules as one of the major characteristics of the deep oceanic zone. Recently, meaning since the 1960's, nodules have been recognized as a potential ore source, investigation of which is stimulated by the progressive depletion of land-based mineral resources. Several generations of scientists from various countries have contributed to the problem of exploration of manganese nodules on the ocean floor. Though the problem has been posed, it has not been solved yet because it required, in its turn, a scrutiny of some fundamental aspects such as composition, nature, accretion r'ate of nodules and retrieval of nodule fields. These problems have been discussed in thousands of papers and larger publications; see, in particulare, Mero, 1965; Horn, 1972; Morgenstein, 1973; Bezrukov, 1976; Glasby, 1977; Bischoff and Piper, 1979; Lalou, 1979; Manganese nodules, 1979; Varentsov, 1980; Cronan, 1980; Manganese nodules . . . , 1984, 1986.
