Excerpt from The Industrial Revolution The classes that labour with their hands for weekly wages have now entrusted to them much of the power possessed by the Government of this country. The future of this country, and the parts of the world dependent on it must be largely settled by the use, wise or foolish, good or evil, they will be making of this power. Their own future depends on it. If they refuse to think, if they choose to listen to fools' advice, if they do not take advantage of the opportunities they have for making themselves better, morally, physically, and intellectually, the world will pass them by speedily and inevitably. Goodwill is no excuse in face of facts only good deeds will count. Knowledge and the will to use it, and the courage and perseverance required to use it rightly, these are the necessities of progress and of well-being of any kind. Ignorance that may be felt (but that may by honest effort be destroyed) is the cause of many more of our troubles than we like to admit. Science, not Creed, is the Deliverer, if we will only take the trouble to follow it. There will be plenty of mistakes on the way, but if a man means to learn by his former mistakes, he nearly always has the chance, and the advance, though slow, will be continuous. Excerpt from Imperial Germany and the Industrial Revolution Among men who have no articulate acquaintance with matters of ethnology it is usual to speak of the several nations of Europe as district races. Even official documents and painstaking historians are not free from this confusion of ideas. In this colloquial use "race" is not conceived to be precisely synonymous with "nation," nor with "people;" although it would often be a difficult matter to make out from the context just what distinctive meaning is attached to one or another of these terms. They are used loosely and suggestively, and for may purposes they may doubtless be so used without compromise of confusion to the arguments; so that it might seem the part of reason to take them as they come, with allowance for such margin of error as necessarily attaches to their colloquial use, and without taking thought of a closer definition or a more discriminate use than what contents those who so find these terms convenient for use in all their colloquial ambiguity. Excerpt from Iron and Steel in the Industrial Revolution This contribution to the history of the English Iron Industry is the product of the leisure, not of an historian, but of one engaged in teaching economic theory. The materials on which it is based were collected when I was on the staff first of the University of Sheffield, then of the University of Birmingham; but most of the actual writing has been done in Manchester. A generation ago writers on modern economic history found their principal quarry in blue-books, Parliamentary Journals, and other Government records. Hence arose not only an over-estimate of the part played by the State in economic development, but also, perhaps, an unduly gloomy View of former industrial society; for it -is the Pathology, rather than the Physiology, of social life that forms the subject of commissions of enquiry, of Home Office reports, and of parliamentary debates. Within the last few years a small group of scholars has attempted to re-write the economic history of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, using as a basis the surviving records of business undertakings. The University of Manchester already possesses the complete documents of four such concerns, and it is hoped that proprietors of long-established businesses will add to the collection. By so doing they will help to a truer View of the past, and therefore to a clearer understanding of the present. They need have no misgivings Concerning publicity. Houses that have stood the test of a century were not built, shamefully, on sand their foundations will bear scrutiny. Excerpt from The Industrial Revolution: A Sermon These are startling words from the lips of one whom prophet and sacred historian have united in naming the Prince of Peace. What did Jesus mean? Did He mean that He came with the dis tinct purpose to stir up enmity and strife, and to turn men into Ishmaelites - every man with his hand against his neighbor? No. Yet He said deliberately that He came to cast a sword in the earth. There are two thoughts that will help us to understand these words of Christ. Excerpt from Industrial Evolution IN the present edition, bearing in mind the way in which this book came into existence and has since expanded, I felt strongly impelled to mark my appreciation of the recognition it has gained, as indicated by several editions and by translations into French, English, Russian, and Bohemian, by preparing additional chapters to remove a number of gaps still noticeable in the last issue. If I have not yielded to the temptation, it is chiefly for the reason that a larger bulk would necessarily prejudice the wider circulation of the volume. The most disturbing want has been met by the insertion of a new chapter on the economic life of primitive peoples (chapter II). The chapter differs from the more detailed one in volume 3 of the Yearbook of the Gehe Stiftung in its more summary form and in the addition of some not unimportant facts. Excerpt from The Industrial Revolution: Being the Parts Entitled Parliamentary Colbertism and Laissez Faire The friend to whom I owe most has not lived to see the publication of a volume in which she was keenly in terested. Both in collecting materials and in the arrange ment and composition of the book I had constant assistance from Miss Lamond of Girton College. I think she knew I was not ungrateful, but I only learned to appreciate her help aright when I lost it. She had a wonderfully high standard of accuracy and thoroughness in work of every kind, and an infinite capacity for taking pains to finish things 06 pro perly. Twenty sheets were printed 06 some time before the rest of the book, but no portion of the proofs had the advantage of her care in revision.
