This publication, Army Techniques Publication ATP 3-21.20 Infantry Battalion December 2017, provides doctrine for the Infantry battalion of the Infantry brigade combat team (IBCT). ATP 3-21.20 describes relationships, organizational roles and functions, capabilities and limitations, and responsibilities within the Infantry battalion. Techniques, nonprescriptive ways or methods used to perform missions, functions, or tasks (CJCSM 5120.01), are discussed in this publication and are intended to be used as a guide. The techniques are not prescriptive. ATP 3-21.20 publication supersedes FM 3-21.20 and FM 3-21.12. Readers must first understand the principles of the Army profession and the Army ethic as described in ADRP 1 to comprehend the doctrine contained in this publication. Readers must understand the principles of joint operations, the nature of unified land operations, and the links between the operational and tactical levels of war described in JP 3-0, ADP 3-0, and ADRP 3-0; FM 3-94, ATP 3-91, and FM 3-96. In addition, readers should understand the fundamentals of the operations process found in ADP 5-0 and ADRP 5-0 associated with offensive and defensive tasks contained in FM 3-90-1 and reconnaissance, security, and tactical enabling tasks contained in FM 3-90-2. The reader must comprehend how stability tasks described in ADP 3-07 and ADRP 3-07 carry over and affect offensive and defensive tasks and vice versa. Readers must understand how the operation process fundamentally relates to the Army's design methodology, military decision-making process, troop-leading procedures, and the principles of mission command as described in ADP 6-0, ADRP 6-0, FM 6-0, and ATP 6-0.5. The principal audience for ATP 3-21.20 is the commanders, staff, officers, and noncommissioned officers within the Infantry battalion. The audience also includes the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command institutions and components, and the United States Army Special Operations Command. This publication serves as an authoritative reference for personnel developing doctrine, materiel and force structure, institutional and unit training, and standard operating procedures for the Infantry battalion.

Users of this manual must understand the elements of doctrinal literature and their relationship to each other. The commonly used terms, tactics, techniques, and procedures are both interrelated and mutually supportive. However, each term has its own usage, level of detail, and place in the hierarchy of doctrinal publications. FMs provide doctrine, tactics, and some techniques, while mission training plans (MTP) provide techniques and procedures. Procedures can also be found in publications such as unit standing operating procedures (SOP) and Soldiers' manuals as well as others. Tactics, techniques, and procedures, in that order, become more prescriptive and require less judgment as these elements are applied. This manual is provided for use by Infantry battalion commanders and staffs, company commanders, and special platoon leaders. The term Infantry unit, as used in this context throughout this manual, refers to all Infantry and Ranger units unless otherwise specified. This Field manual (FM) describes how logistics operations take place in the Brigade Support Area of Operations. It is primarily focused on how the brigade support battalion (BSB) performs its mission, but it also addresses the roles and functions of other sustainment elements within the brigade combat team (BCT) as well as those organizations external to the BCT that provide logistics and individual Soldier support services. This field manual was written for BSB staff officers and non-commissioned officers. Knowing that many are assigned to battalion staffs prior to advanced formal education, this manual provides all a general idea of functions performed by each unit and staff section assigned to the BSB. Chapter 1 is a review of modular force logistics and the various types of brigade combat teams and support brigades. Recent historiography has almost universally denounced the tactical prowess of the American Expeditionary Force. However, a detailed analysis of the performance of the 42nd Division’s 165th Infantry Regiment tells a surprisingly different story. Despite the challenges of the First World War battlefield, the 165th Infantry Regiment compiled a remarkable record of tactical effectiveness in its 180 days of combat. During its six campaigns, the regiment repeatedly held the line and seized objectives against veteran German units in a variety of situations and under various conditions. At the regimental level, a de facto adoption of trench warfare doctrine enabled the unit to synchronize the combined arms and avoid the doctrinal dysfunction the plagued the majority of the AEF. At the tactical level, the Irish platoons and companies rapidly became adept at using Indian-style or infiltration tactics to advance, seize terrain, and destroy German positions. In addition, superb leadership throughout the regiment and stellar unit cohesion played significant roles in the unit’s superior tactical proficiency. In sum, these four factors enabled the 165th to achieve a level of tactical effectiveness second to none among the non-regular regiments of the AEF and equal to the best units within the German Army.
