Rogo presents a history via accounts of the lives and work of those who researched the spiritistic theory of mental illness as well as of those who investigate it today. According to the spiritistic theory, some cases of psychological disorder and multiple personality may be the end result of obsession or even possession by discarnate spirits. Part 1 reviews the following cases researched by James H. Hyslop: the Thompson-Gifford case, Etta de Camp, and the Doris Fischer case. In Part 2 there is a chapter which reviews the research work of Titus Bull and Carl Wickland in which, working through a medium or a spiritualist rescue circle, obsessing or possessing spirits were contacted and attempts were made to convince them to progress spiritually and to let go their hold on the living. The next chapter describes the work of Walter Franklin Prince?s efforts to exorcise the possessed. Another chapter concerns the ministry of Elwood Worcester. The third part deals with research work today, and has chapters on Kardecismo groups (Brazilian spiritistic followers of Allan Kardec) and the modern channel Matthew Bronson who is involved with a rescue circle in Northern California. There is a chapter on M. Scott Peck, who holds that some multiple personality cases are a form of demonic possession. Peck has developed a method of exorcism to deal with them. Also touched on is the work of Ralph Allison. In the next chapter Rogo considers whether or not cases of apparent possession are literally true: that is, with the questions "Do we ultimately survive death," and "Can we subsequently reach back and contact the living?" He considers the possibilities of fraud and the super-ESP hypothesis, and concludes that at least some cases of genuine spirit possession probably exist.

native settlement, in 1950 he graduated - as an extramural studen- from Groznyi Teachers College and in 1957 from Rostov University. He taught mathematics in Novocherkask Polytechnic Institute and its branch in the town of Shachty. That was when his mathematical talent blossomed and he obtained the main results given in the present monograph. In 1969 N. V. Govorov received the degree of Doctor of Mathematics and the aca demic rank of a Professor. From 1970 until his tragic death on 24 April 1981, N. V. Govorov worked as Head of the Department of Mathematical Anal ysis of Kuban' University actively engaged in preparing new courses and teaching young mathematicians. His original mathematical talent, vivid reactions, kindness bordering on self-sacrifice made him highly respected by everybody who knew him. In preparing this book for publication I was given substantial assistance by E. D. Fainberg and A. I. Heifiz, while V. M. Govorova took a significant part of the technical work with the manuscript. Professor C. Prather con tributed substantial assistance in preparing the English translation of the book. I. V. Ostrovskii. PREFACE The classic statement of the Riemann boundary problem consists in finding a function (z) which is analytic and bounded in two domains D+ and D-, with a common boundary - a smooth closed contour L admitting a continuous extension onto L both from D+ and D- and satisfying on L the boundary condition +(t) = G(t)-(t) + g(t).

An ad hoc method to solve boundary value problems which are posed on infinite intervals is to reduce the infinite interval to a finite but large one and to impose additional boundary conditions at the far end. These boundary conditions should be posed in a way so that they express the asymptotic behaviour of the actual solution well. In this paper a rigorous theory is derived which defines classes of appropriate additional boundary conditions. Appropriate is to be understood in the sense that the solutions of the approximate problems converge to the actual solution of the 'infinite' problem as the length of the finite interval tends to infinity. Moreover boundary conditions which produce convergence with the largest expectable order are devised. (Author).

Infinite interval problems abound in nature and yet until now there has been no book dealing with such problems. The main reason for this seems to be that until the 1970's for the infinite interval problem all the theoretical results available required rather technical hypotheses and were applicable only to narrowly defined classes of problems. Thus scientists mainly offer~d and used special devices to construct the numerical solution assuming tacitly the existence of a solution. In recent years a mixture of classical analysis and modern fixed point theory has been employed to study the existence of solutions to infinite interval problems. This has resulted in widely applicable results. This monograph is a cumulation mainly of the authors' research over a period of more than ten years and offers easily verifiable existence criteria for differential, difference and integral equations over the infinite interval. An important feature of this monograph is that we illustrate almost all the results with examples. The plan of this monograph is as follows. In Chapter 1 we present the existence theory for second order boundary value problems on infinite intervals. We begin with several examples which model real world phenom ena. A brief history of the infinite interval problem is also included. We then present general existence results for several different types of boundary value problems. Here we note that for the infinite interval problem only two major approaches are available in the literature.
