Excerpt from The Influence of Christianity, Vol. 8: On the Vocabulary of Old English No one of the above cited authors had, to my mind, treated the theme anything like as exhaustively as the subject demanded. In the lists of words and expressions cited it was often hard to see precisely wherein the influence of Christianity consisted; and the reader was forced to a continual use of the dictionary to supply the deficiency. Furthermore no trace of an exposition of the historical development of a word or expression within the language in question was to be observed; in short the entire treatment seemed to me much too brief and rudimentary. Starting out with the intention of reading only the more important anglo-saxon monuments, I soon found it desirable for even a tolerably complete presentation of my subject to include within the scope of the investigation every work of any importance in the language. This, of course, much ih creased the bulk of preparatory work. I had hoped to complete the whole as a dissertation; but have been compelled by the increased amount of the materials collected to abandon this purpose and publish at the present a work equal to about one third of the entire undertaking. I trust to be enabled at a future date to complete the remaining parts of the work. Part I. Discusses the Church in its entirety; i. E. Treats all words and expressions relating to the divisions of the human race, the departed members of the Church, secular and monastic clergy, ecclesiastical dress and revenues, ecclesiastical edifices, holy times and seasons, divine service, and the Bible. Part II. Will discuss belief and whatsoever is connected there with; e. G. Various religious conceptions and abstract ideas, God, the Trinity, philosophical notions of the world, sin, penance, confession, etc. For the second part much material has already been collected. It has not been found advisable to treat prose and poetry separately, there being too few variations in the poetic usage from that of the prose; where such occur they have been noted. They were held together by com mon sympathies, common creeds, common sacred books, certain, as yet simple, but common rites, common usages of life, and an hierarchy everywhere, in theory at least, of the same power and influence. They admitted the Christians of other'places by some established sign, or by recom mendatory letters. They were often bound together by mutual charitable subventions. Still each was an absolutely independent community. The Roman East, including Greece, had no capital. The old kingdoms might respect the traditionary greatness of some city, which had been the abode of their kings, or which was the seat of a central provincial government: other cities, from their wealth and population, may have assumed a superior rank, Antioch in Syria, Alexandria in Egypt, Ephesus in Asia Minor. But though churches known or reputed to have been founded by Apostles might be looked on with peculiar respect, there was as yet no subordination, no supremacy; their federal union was a voluntary association. Whether the internal constitution had become more or less rapidly or completely monarchical; whether the Bishop had risen to a greater or less height above his co-presbyters, the whole episcopal order, the representatives of each church, were on the same level. The Metropolitan and afterwards the Patriarchal dignity was of later growth. Jerusalem, which might naturally have aspired to the rank of the Christian capital, at least of the East, had been destroyed, and remained desolate for many years: it assumed only at a later period (at one time it was subject to Caesarea) even the Patriarchal rank. Ferdinand Christian Baur (1792-1860) has been described as "the greatest and at the same time the most controversial theologian in German Protestant theology since Schleiermacher." The controversy was epitomized by a nineteenth-century British critic who wrote that his theory "makes of Christianity a thing of purely natural origin, calls in question the authenticity of all but a few of the New Testament books, and makes the whole collection contain not a harmonious system of divine truth, but a confused mass of merely human and contradictory opinions as to the nature of the Christian religion." The contributors to this volume, however, regard Baur as an epoch-making New Testament scholar whose methods and conclusions, though superseded, have been mostly affirmed during the century and a half since his death. This collection focuses on the history of early Christianity, although as a historian of the church and theology Baur covered the entire field up to own time. He combined the most exacting historical research with a theological interpretation of history influenced by Kant, Schelling, and Hegel. The first three chapters discuss Baur's relation to Strauss, Möhler, and Hegel. Then a central core of chapters considers his historical and exegetical perspectives (Judaism and Hellenism, Gnosticism, New Testament introduction and theology, the Pauline epistles, the Synoptic Gospels, John, the critique of miracle, and the combination of absoluteness and relativity). The final chapters view his influence by analyzing the reception of Baur in Britain, Baur and Harnack, and Baur and practical theology. This work offers a multi-faceted picture of his thinking, which will stimulate contemporary discussion.
