Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 155. As we become a space-faring culture, there is an increasing need for reliable methods to forecast the dynamics of electromagnetic fields, thermal plasma, and energetic particles in the geospace environment, as all these factors affect satellite-borne systems. From the electrodynamics viewpoint, on the other hand, the inner magnetosphere is a key element in the Sun-Earth connection chain of processes. Most notably, it is a region where a significant part of the storm-time energy input from the solar wind is deposited and dissipated. Because the most interesting and crucially important phenomena, as noted, develop relatively close to Earth (in the transition region separating the innermost quasi-dipolar geomagnetic field from the magnetotail), understanding them is a complex task. Moreover, the stronger the disturbance, the deeper its impact penetrates into the inner magneto-sphere. In this region plasma no longer behaves like a fluid, and the motion of energetic charged particles becomes important for the dynamics of the system. This fact leaves “particle simulations” as a primary tool for studying and understanding the dynamics of the inner magnetosphere during storms. An integral element of such simulations is an electromagnetic field model. Recent studies of the inner magnetosphere have substantially improved our understanding of its dynamics while creating new paradigms and reviving old controversies.

This thesis focuses on ULF (Ultra-low-frequency) waves' interaction with plasmasphere particles and ring current ions in the inner magnetosphere. It first reports and reveals mutual effect between ULF waves and plasmasphere using Van Allen Probes data. The differences and similarities of different ring current ions interacting with ULF waves are extensively explored using Cluster data, which provides a potential explanation for O+-dominated ring current during the magnetic storms. Furthermore, this thesis finds a method to study the phase relationship between ULF waves and drift-bounce resonant particles, and proposes that the phase relationship can be used to diagnose the parallel structure of standing wave electric field and energy transfer directions between waves and particles. The findings in this thesis can significantly promote our understanding of ULF waves' role in the dynamics of inner magnetosphere.

Abstract: The goals of this dissertation are: (1) to understand the physics describing the structure and dynamics of magnetic field configurations in Earth's inner magnetosphere; (2) to assess the performance of data-based and physics-based global magnetospheric models under various conditions; and (3) to quantify the responses of global magnetic and electric fields to solar wind variations, and ultimately their effects on radial transport of radiation belt electrons. The radiation belt charged particle environment, the relativistic electrons in particular, changes by orders of magnitude on a variety of time scales in a complicated fashion. In order to understand and model the dynamic behavior of radiation belt electrons, we first need global, realistic, self-consistent, and time-dependent magnetospheric models. Therefore, we compare state-of-the-art empirical Tsyganenko models and Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry (LFM) physics-based code predictions with geosynchronous measurements to assess their performance and quantify the field configurations and fluctuations in the inner magnetosphere. The Tsyganenko storm model best predicts the large-scale field magnitude for all geomagnetic conditions, but fails to reproduce small-scale wave fields. On the other hand, the LFM code reproduces both the field configurations and ultra-low-frequency (ULF) waves during non-storm intervals. Next, we simulate the dynamics of radiation belt electrons using global magnetic and electric fields from the LFM code, driven by idealized solar wind over a range of velocities. We follow the trajectories of electrons, starting at different local times and radii for the same first adiabatic invariant, to understand their transport and energization through collective wave-particle interactions. Finally, we quantify the ULF wave effects on radiation belt electrons by calculating the radial diffusion coefficients from the LFM simulation results. The derived coefficients as a function of solar wind velocity, of 10 -4 to 1 day -1 in the outer electron belt, are comparable to observational results after normalizing for wave power. Using this method, we conclude that diffusive electron transport is well simulated for various solar wind conditions and geomagnetic activity levels, a significant step toward quantitative understanding of the complex, dynamical radiation belt environment.

We propose to examine the relationship of geomagnetic storms and substorms and the transport of energetic particles in the inner magnetosphere using measurements of the auroral X-ray emissions by PIXIE. PIXIE provides a global view of the auroral oval for the extended periods of time required to study stormtime phenomena. Its unique energy response and global view allow separation of stormtime particle transport driven by strong magnetospheric electric fields from substorm particle transport driven by magnetic-field dipolarization and subsequent particle injection. The relative importance of substorms in releasing stored magnetospheric energy during storms and injecting particles into the inner magnetosphere and the ring current is currently hotly debated. The distribution of particles in the inner magnetosphere is often inferred from measurements of the precipitating auroral particles. Thus, the global distributions of the characteristics of energetic precipitating particles during storms and substorms are extremely important inputs to any description or model of the geospace environment and the Sun-Earth connection.
