This volume contains the 2 Books:The Innocence of Father Brown and The Wisdom of Father Brown, the beloved character created by English novelist G. K. Chesterton, who stars in 51 detective short stories (and two framing vignettes). Chesterton based the character on Father John O'Connor (1870-1952), a parish priest in Bradford who was involved in Chesterton's conversion to Catholicism in 1922. Father Brown is a short, stumpy Roman Catholic Church priest, "formerly of Cobhole in Essex, and now working in London", with shapeless clothes and a large umbrella, and an uncanny insight into human evil. Unlike the more famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown's methods tend to be intuitive rather than deductive. 1. The Innocence of Father Brown, 1911"The Blue Cross", The Story-Teller, September 1910; first published as "Valentin Follows a Curious Trail", The Saturday Evening Post, 23 July 1910"The Secret Garden", The Story-Teller, October 1910."The Queer Feet", The Story-Teller, November 1910."The Flying Stars", The Saturday Evening Post, 20 May 1911."The Invisible Man", The Saturday Evening Post, 28 January 1911."The Honour of Israel Gow" (as "The Strange Justice", The Saturday Evening Post, 25 March 1911."The Wrong Shape", The Saturday Evening Post, 10 December 1910."The Sins of Prince Saradine", The Saturday Evening Post, 22 April 1911."The Hammer of God" (as "The Bolt from the Blue", The Saturday Evening Post, 5 November 1910."The Eye of Apollo", The Saturday Evening Post, 25 February 1911."The Sign of the Broken Sword", The Saturday Evening Post, 7 January 1911."The Three Tools of Death", The Saturday Evening Post, 24 June 1911.2. The first of G.K. Chesterton's books about seemingly hapless sleuth Father Brown, "The Innocence of Father Brown" collects twelve classic tales: "The Blue Cross," "The Secret Garden," "The Queer Feet," "The Flying Stars," "The Invisible Man," "The Honour of Israel Gow," "The Wrong Shape," "The Sins of Prince Saradine," "The Hammer of God," "The Eye of Apollo," "The Sign of the Broken Sword," and "The Three Tools of Death." "Father Brown is a direct challenge to the conventional detective and in many ways he is more amusing and ingenious."

Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, Technical University of Braunschweig, 7 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Gilbert Keith Chesterton started writing when he was a schoolboy and today his work is well-known all over the world. In spite of his literary accomplishments, he considered himself primarily a journalist. But he also wrote a hundred books, contributions to 200 books, hundreds of poems, five plays, five novels and more than two hundred short stories, including a popular series on "Father Brown" which I think is one of his greatest works. These stories on "Father Brown" have been written between 1911 and 1935 and are summarized in five books called "The Innocence of Father Brown," "The Wisdom of Father Brown," "The Incredulity of Father Brown," "The Secret of Father Brown" and "The Scandal of Father Brown." All the books "constitute a fascinating summary of Chesterton practising what he preached" 1 . In my work I will concentrate on the second Father Brown book called "The Wisdom of Father Brown." It was published in 1914 and contains twelve stories on the priestdetective Father Brown. First I will give short summaries of the four stories I chose from the book and afterwards I will focus on the main character Father Brown, his attitudes and his development. To do this I will mainly give attention to the four stories I selected but also prove some of my statements by referring to one of the other stories. I will also compare Chesterton's views with the attitudes of his figure Father Brown.

He put his mind and pen to a broad spectrum of subjects including theology, poetry, biography, journalism and philosophy. Great writers have no influence over those parts of their work which posterity decides is most significant or will be best remembered, in Chesterton's case-in the minds of many-he will forever be remembered as the creator of the little Roman Catholic priest-detective, Father Brown. The vitality of that character has endured, evergreen, never losing its charm. Chesterton, was a lover of detective and mystery fiction and his own contribution to the genre extends far beyond the Father Brown stories. Leonaur has collected Chesterton's fabulous, intriguing and entertaining mysteries-in order of original book publication-into six substantial volumes to enable his many aficionados to own and read them in either softcover or hardback with dust jacket for collectors. This collection is the ideal way to possess these essential books of crime, mystery and detection and no enthusiast's library will be complete without them. Volume two contains two collections of the famous Father Brown stories-'The Innocence of Father Brown' and 'The Wisdom of Father Brown'-24 absolutely essential stories of the Roman Catholic priest with an almost supernatural insight into human evil.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton was an English writer who lived at the turn of the 20th century. His works explored a number of subjects such as philosophy, poetry, journalism, lectures, criticism, and theatrical plays. However, his best-known stories feature the character of an English priest and detective named Father Brown. While the character was based on a real priest who was involved in Chesterton's own conversion of faith, the adventures and mysteries that Father Brown solves are purely fictional. Included in the collection "Father Brown: The Essential Tales" are "The Blue Cross," "The Invisible Man," "The Strange Crime of John Boulnois," and twelve other thrilling stories. What is interesting about Father Brown is that he does not rely on deductive reasoning like other famous detectives, namely Sherlock Holmes. Instead, Father Brown relies on intuition. He puts himself into the mind of the perpetrator and figures out the criminal's steps along the way. Part of what makes him a great detective is that Father Brown is never shocked by the atrocities that he sees. As a priest, he says that he has already heard about all the awful things people do and think; nothing surprises him anymore. He also refuses to believe in any supernatural explanations and instead focuses on a case's reasonable explanation. Anyone wanting a fun and entertaining read with a great character to lead the way should add "Father Brown: The Essential Tales" to their reading list.
