Kevin is a police officer and his wife Carla is a school teacher, whose roles complement each others, and blends with their opposite functions; Kevin’s role is to maintain law and order in his community and in the streets he polices, while Carla’s role is to maintain learning and behavioral discipline among her young students in her classroom. Douglas, and Lydia are Carla’s parents. Their function in their community is compatible with each other, where Douglas, a mail clerk, and Lydia, a nurse, made positive contribution to their family and friends, until sadly, Lydia suffered a severe stroke and had a fall that left her a quadriplegic. After which, Douglas assumed the sad role of comforting his wife Lydia with his flashback narrative about the good times they had during their marriage. He recounts their yearly vacation abroad, as he tries to draw her attention to that happy time, compared to her stay in a nursing home, hoping she would get well of her serious injury. Kevin and his wife, Carla could not have known that they would become the victims of a viscous crime that took place before their front door. They thought it would be a happy home coming from their second honeymoon, and not be the victims of a car highjack. Kevin agonized later over his violent reaction to the car hijacker, Caprice, with his family’s antagonism to law and order of which Kevin had to deal with throughout the story, until the Caprice got his comeuppance in a failed robbery attempt. He has to cope with Caprice’s friends, as he does with his relatives, whose illegal behavior drew his police authority in the community. Kevin and Carla Brown are not as innocent of their past, as they are apprehensive of their future and their need to succeed. They function as authority figures, where Kevin, a police officer, controls and regulates the illegal behavior of lawbreakers. His job is to police the law breaker’s antagonism toward his community and to society, by illegal actions that preceded the youth’s hostility to the learning discipline in the classroom, misbehavior that leaks out into the community, and to the greater society. Kevin’s job then is to uphold the lawful function of society, by bringing such lawbreakers to justice. Carla grieved with her father over her mother, Lydia’s serious injury that left her a quadriplegic. Her support of her father revealed to Douglas, how essential his daughter had become to him maintaining his equilibrium during her mother’s nursing home confinement. She consoles him while he reminisces about his life with her mother and the good times they and their New York, travel, group, enjoyed on their yearly vacation trips abroad. They enjoyed a good life, until, his wife, Lydia’s tragic injury cut short their comfortable life style. Douglas, who worked as a Postal Worker, and Lydia, a Registered Nurse, made their living providing a service to the public. Carla knew that most parents entrust her with their children to educate them as she is to monitor their behavior and learning skills. She saw herself held responsible by parents for their grown-up actions in the classroom as she is with their learning from her what is good and what is not, and teaches them how to learn. Her job as teacher often conflicts with students who are experiencing the wonder and mystery of their raging hormones that inhibit her supervision of them. Yet she persists to instruct and guide students to a learning discipline as grounding for their future. If she achieves this, it will make her husband, Kevin’s role as a police officer, easier, if not, unnecessary. Kevin’s job, as a police officer, equips, him to coral lawbreakers and brings them to justice by detaining them and put them in custody of the law. It haunts him, nevertheless, whenever he has to arrest young “Innocents” who have assumed the role of the “Damned," because of their antagonism to the rule of law. Sebastian St. Cyr investigates the mysterious life and death of a nobleman convicted of murder in this enthralling new historical mystery from the USA Today bestselling author of Why Kill the Innocent.... It's June 1814, and the royal families of Austria, Russia, and the German states have gathered in London at the Prince Regent's invitation to celebrate the defeat of Napoléon and the restoration of monarchical control throughout Europe. But the festive atmosphere is marred one warm summer evening by the brutal murder of a disgraced British nobleman long thought dead. Eighteen years before, Nicholas Hayes, the third son of the late Earl of Seaford, was accused of killing a beautiful young French émigré and transported to Botany Bay for life. Even before his conviction, Hayes had been disowned by his father, and few in London were surprised when they heard the ne'er-do-well had died in disgrace in New South Wales. But those reports were obviously wrong. Recently Hayes returned to London with a mysterious young boy in tow--a child who vanishes shortly after Nicholas's body is discovered. Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, is drawn into the investigation by his valet, Jules Calhoun, an old friend of the dead man. With Calhoun's help, Sebastian begins to piece together the shattered life of the late Earl's ill-fated youngest son. Why did Nicholas risk his life and freedom by returning to England? And why did he bring the now-missing young boy with him? Several nervous Londoners had reason to fear that Nicholas Hayes had returned to kill them. One of them might have decided to kill him first.

"I was eaten, plain and simple. It felt like being burned alive, like every cell in my body was exploding. Then everything stopped—my breathing, my pain, my heart . . ." The Innocent is a passionate lyrical novel and modern myth, at once a coming of age story and a guide to life’s most mysterious and powerful force: Love. Reminiscent of A.S. Byatt’s Possession and Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, The Innocent tells of a woman’s mythic journey through sorrow and death toward fulfilment and understanding. Alexa Wyndham is a painfully sheltered girl from Brooklyn with a mysterious past. She is an innocent in every sense of the word, her views of the world formed through the lens of the poetry and literary novels she reads. Now on her own in college in Manhattan she finds the big bad city is waiting to devour her. When she goes out with friends on Valentine’s Day, a stunning kiss from a stranger is her introduction to this new and dangerous world. Her would be lover is after her flesh. It contains a most powerful transformative energy, and the supernatural creatures of the city are willing to do anything for a taste of it. Eight-hundred-year-old Lord of New York City Cristien LaRoche thinks he is just doing his job when he rescues Alexa from the clutches of a rabid night creature, but she is much more than just a helpless victim. He has not seen anyone like her in an eternity, and he has been glad of it. Alexa is an Innocent, a nascent daemon on the verge of her change. He will be damned if helps her and damned if he doesn't. Even if he can save her from those who seek her power, he still won’t be able to protect her from his own deadly past. Alexa and Cristien may be the most unexpected couple to ever search for True Love, but they are also fated to be together. They will embark on the road rarely travelled, facing terrible trials and crushing defeats in order to get that most coveted prize. As these two souls struggle to find a way to be together, they will learn about the wisdom of forgiveness, the nature of suffering, the seduction of evil, and the power of unconditional love.

Whether the subject is Jack Ruby, Willie Nelson, or his own leukemia-stricken son Mark, when it comes to looking at the world through another person's eyes, nobody does it better than Gary Cartwright. For over twenty-five years, readers of Texas Monthly have relied on Cartwright to tell the stories behind the headlines with pull-no-punches honesty and wry humor. His reporting has told us not just what's happened over three decades in Texas, but, more importantly, what we've become as a result. This book collects seventeen of Cartwright's best Texas Monthly articles from the 1980s and 1990s, along with a new essay, "My Most Unforgettable Year," about the lasting legacy of the Kennedy assassination. He ranges widely in these pieces, from the reasons for his return to Texas after a New Mexican exile to profiles of Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson. Along the way, he strolls through San Antonio's historic King William District; attends a Dallas Cowboys old-timers reunion and the Holyfield vs. Foreman fight; visits the front lines of Texas' new range wars; gets inside the heads of murderers, gamblers, and revolutionaries; and debunks Viagra miracles, psychic surgery, and Kennedy conspiracy theories. In Cartwright's words, these pieces all record "the renewal of my Texas-ness, a rediscovery of Texas after returning home."
