Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2016 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Literatur, Note: 1.7, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Daniel Defoe’s novel "Robinson Crusoe" (1719) revolves around the Englishman Robinson Crusoe, who, after suffering shipwreck in a storm strands on a deserted island as the sole survivor of an expedition. After twenty-four of his total twenty-eight years on the island he discovers that native cannibals occasionally visit the island in order to kill and eat their captives. When Crusoe rescues one of them the captive is grateful and stays with Crusoe as his servant. Crusoe names him Friday after the day of their first encounter and teaches him the English language and eventually converts him to Christianity. "Robinson Crusoe" is considered a classic which has been issued in at least 700 editions and translated into several languages. The story has been made into several movies. I want to argue, that the motif of the cannibal is instrumentalized in the novel in order to justify the conquering and civilizing of savage natives by the dominant Western world. By depicting dreadful cannibalistic acts and evoking horror and revulsion the subjects of colonialism are intended to be dehumanized. I will begin the seminar paper with a contextual chapter on cannibalism by presenting the definition and origin of the term ‘cannibal’, as well as the existence of cannibalism in literature by giving various examples from classic epic to contemporary novels. Then, I will focus on Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe and illustrate the protagonist’s constant fear of being eaten. In a next step, I will focus on Crusoe’s encounters with the cannibals and in a further step on his meeting of Friday and his representation of the latter. Before drawing the conclusion, I will analyze the relationship between Crusoe and Friday.

Whoever commits this crime may not even be considered human anymore and may be treated like an animal, for it seems to be the ultimate borderline between men and beasts. It therefore can also be used as an instrument of defaming others, because unfortunately the basic principle of in dubio pro reo does not work here. This book explores significant problems in the fiction of Daniel Defoe. Maximillian E. ABOUT THE BOOK When I first read Robinson Crusoe, I’ll admit, it was an assignment. I wasn’t really into the idea of reading a story about a man who gets dumped on an uninhabited island and then finds redemption as he learns to live with himself for twenty-eight years. As soon as I started the story though, I realized that I had the wrong idea that entire time. The story is about a man who lives on a deserted island for close to thirty years, but the way nature entwines with the main character, nestling into every cranny of his psyche as he learns that he is just as much a part of the island as the tree he sleeps in or the fire he builds, is really quite magical. MEET THE AUTHOR Danielle Clark has an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from St. Mary's College of California and a B.A. in English Literature from UC Davis. She currently resides in the Bay Area and works as a Journalist in San Francisco's Financial District. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK The story begins with Robinson Crusoe, a young man with a case of wanderlust, who does not want to heed his father’s wishes and settle into a career, but to travel by sea. He leaves, against the will of both his father and mother, and meets with several violent sea storms. The captain of his ship tells him that he is not cut out to be a seafarer, but Crusoe is too ashamed to go home and admit to his parents that his plans for sea life did not work out, so he boards another ship where he has better luck as a sailor. On the way back from an expedition to Africa he is taken captive by a Moor, but soon escapes, along with a slave. He then buys a sugar plantation in Brazil, where he is prosperous for some time. Crusoe sets off on an expedition to Africa where he plans to buy a shipload of African slaves for his sugar plantation, but in the process he is shipwrecked. When Crusoe regains consciousness after the wreck he realizes that he is the only survivor. He utilizes as many supplies as possible from the wrecked ship, and makes himself a crude shelter. Over time, Crusoe begins to develop many survival skills that aid him during his time alone on the island. He becomes a craftsman and develops many tools to enhance the comfort of his solitary life. As the years pass Crusoe also starts to develop a strong relationship with God. He communicates with God, and in order to understand his musings and stay in touch with his former life he begins to keep a journal. Crusoe renews his duty to God, and once this happens he is also able to explore the island more deeply and find a place on an alternate area of the island to build a nicer home. This paper will deal with certain interpretations of the novel that regard the protagonist Crusoe as a classic example of homo economicus, focus on a concept of work that is supposed to underline what is called dignity of labour and construct Crusoe’s island life as an ideal state of natural existence. All these concepts of interpretation that were applied to Defoe’s novel during time share, as conceived here, certain colonial connotations, which are also emphasised by Defoe’s concept of the native colonial subject Friday. Therefore, Defoe’s novel can still be read as a prototype of colonial fiction, mirroring the ideological concerns of the Western imagery on the ‘New World’. On attempt to deconstruct colonial fiction is the intertextual rereading of Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe by the South African author J.M. Coetzee in his novel Foe. Coetzee’s work itself is here conceived as an attempt to deconstruct the colonial myth that has been implicitly or explicitly attached to the figure of Robinson Crusoe and his story. In regard to Coetzee’s reconception of the English classic the concepts that are illustrated and examined in the first part of this paper, in context of Defoe’s original, will be revised in terms of appropriation of space in colonial fiction, the figure of Crusoe and Friday and the question of the telling of colonial history.
