Alan Tippett’s publications played a significant role in the development of missiology. The volumes in this series augment his distinguished reputation by bringing to light his many unpublished materials and hard-to-locate printed articles. These books—encompassing theology, anthropology, history, area studies, religion, and ethnohistory—broaden the contours of the discipline. This volume contains two manuscripts. The first, The Integrating Gospel, combines a historical ethnolinguistic study of Fijian language, an examination of Fijian culture patterns in interaction with the church, and Tippett’s own firsthand experience as a communicator of the gospel to specific receptors at a specific place and point in time. From this, Tippett is able to extrapolate broader ideas on contextualization and methods of gospel transmission. In The Christian: Fiji 1835–67, Tippett addresses the establishment of the Christian church and the spread of Christianity in Fiji, with special attention to Ratu Cakobau. In this brief but in-depth study, Tippett presents a strong case against the understanding that Fijian conversions to Christianity were primarily political, as he offers evidence of the genuine religious and spiritual experiences behind these conversions.

This study aims to read Jesus’s foot washing narrative missionally (John 13:1–38). A missional reading is identical to a missional hermeneutics based on the literary-theological interpretation of the text. John uses sending language and formulae, and the frame of “as . . ., so . . .” throughout the whole Gospel, which clarifies Jesus’s and his disciples’ mission as integrated witness. In this literary context, the foot washing narrative signifies the integrated witness of Jesus and the disciples. The narrative consists of two parts: one, Jesus’s symbolic action for his death, and the other, for its interpretation for the disciple community. Jesus’s death, as his unique mission, results in purifying both his disciples and the world so that they might dwell in the holy union with the triune God. The disciples are sent into the world. Just as Jesus did, so must they proclaim Jesus and his teachings. Also, they should bear witness to him by living Jesus’s life-pattern of self-giving, sacrificial love, and humble service. Their verbal proclamation as evangelism and life-witness cannot be separated to testify to Jesus and their identity. Finally, today’s Christians, specifically Evangelicals, are invited to participate in the Johannine mission as the integrated witness of evangelism and life-witness.

Cultural Integration And The Gospel In Vietnamese Mission Theology written by KimSon Nguyen and has been published by Langham Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-14 with Religion categories.

Postcolonial Vietnam has an urgent need for contextualized theology of mission, God, Christ, and the church that is rooted in indigenous cultural traditions and the dual Vietnamese spirit of resistance and assimilation. Dr KimSon Nguyen navigates the religio-cultural dimensions of Vietnamese spirituality and Daoism that have hindered the assimilation of the Christian faith in the Vietnamese context and explores a fresh approach to missiology in Vietnam. Dr Nguyen draws upon his deep knowledge of Vietnamese evangelical history to analyze contextualization and mission theology in Vietnam. He proposes an evangelical theology of God as Ðạo (way / 道), the centrality of the Vietnamese home as the “house of the Lord,” and ancestor veneration as a theological framework for an indigenous theology of the family. Narrowing the gap between culturally removed evangelical missionary practice and widespread syncretistic spirituality in Vietnam, Nguyen calls for a paradigm shift in Vietnamese mission theology that is both robustly evangelical and authentically Vietnamese.

The goal of this dissertation is articulating the integration of evangelism and social concern in Keller's ministry. It also investigates if this integration is based on his understanding of the wholeness of the gospel. The work has six chapters for achieving this objective. Chapter 1 treats introductory matters. It suggests the need for this study regarding the integration of evangelism and social concern because tension about the relationship between evangelism and social responsibility has existed for over a century. This chapter includes seven research questions, backgrounds, methodology, a limitation, and delimitations. Chapter 2 reviews Keller's life experiences that have shaped his understanding of the gospel and ministry. Because no works are currently published about Keller's life, the introduction to his books, his sermons, and Redeemer's home page constitute primary resources. This biography helps grasp the development of his comprehension of the gospel, and his evangelism and social ministry integration. Chapter 3 emphasizes clarifying Keller's understanding of the gospel. His gospel definition is furnished. The chapter illustrates how he expounds his comprehension of the gospel with two frames. The first one has four themes: God, sin, Christ, and faith. It concerns what must I do to be saved? The second frame additionally has four themes: creation, the fall, redemption, and restoration. It answers what hope is there for this world? Keller contends they must be interwoven for biblical understanding of the gospel. Chapter 4 elucidates why and how the gospel promotes personal and social impacts. The chapter demonstrates that radical gospel grace deals with the fundamental human problem--sin underneath sins. Thus, the gospel changes the human heart and motives, and ways the gospel brings about active engagement in social justice and cultural renewal. Chapter 5 investigates how Keller's understanding of the gospel shaped Redeemer Presbyterian Church five ministry areas: evangelism, community formation (discipleship), social justice, cultural renewal, and church planting. Chapter 6 provides a brief summary and areas for further study. It concludes the dissertation with thoughts regarding Keller's contributions to Christianity.

The Unfolding Gospel written by John P. Bowen and has been published by Fortress Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-06 with Religion categories.

Many congregations and their leaders are discouraged about the future of the church. John Bowen's conviction is that the solution is to be found not in new programs or strategies but in a recovery of theological vision--that of Jesus and his gospel, which transforms every aspect of life. This vision restores hope in the only way realistically possible._ Words like mission, discipleship, church, evangelism, renewal, and church planting are used like billiard balls--all rolling around a single table, unconnected and bouncing randomly off one another. This book pulls these ideas together into a coherent and organic whole. The gospel is the hermeneutical key for understanding each of these topics and what draws them together. Thus, chapter 1 is an exposition of the gospel (God's determination to make all things new through Jesus Christ). Chapter 2 discusses discipleship (we only understand discipleship in light of the gospel), and chapter 3 covers church (we only understand church if we understand discipleship). Chapter 4 considers culture as the arena in which the gospel is lived and talked about, and chapter 5 builds on that with a discussion of translation, not only as a missional necessity but as a ministry which itself incarnates the nature of the gospel. The remaining chapters (on evangelism, the future of "inherited churches," church planting, and leadership) demonstrate how the gospel is the integration point for all._ The author's hope is that church leaders--evangelical and mainline, young and old, emerging and traditional, present and future--will have a transformative "Aha!" moment as this gospel hypothesis unfolds._
