Interim Ministry: Positive Change in a Time of Transition contains in-depth case studies of two short-term interim appointments. This work goes well beyond simply offering theories and methodologies on how to do interim ministry. Instead it details concrete examples of how the initial goals of the interim pastor may be implemented through programs, group interaction, pastoral care, sermons, and written communication. The first interim appointment followed the death of a beloved pastor after a two-year battle with cancer. The second interim began in the midst of a church meltdown following an appointment change of senior pastor. Both interim appointments began in a time of crisis—the first marked by deep grief and the second saturated with disillusionment and even some despair. In spite of the initial environments of high anxiety and discouragement, both churches were able to regain a sense of hope and redefine or reclaim their church identity. Indeed both churches experienced real positive change in the midst of very difficult circumstances. This book was written to be a catalyst for professional reflection and to serve as a model for being a transformational agent for churches in need of a more hopeful and fruitful future.

An Interim's Gift to a CongregationEvery church experiences a time when the previous pastor leaves and the congregation confronts the challenge of finding a new pastor for their church. The time of transition that begins when the former pastor is no longer present and the new pastor has not yet arrived is often a time of uncertainty. Regardless of whether the experience with the previous pastor was positive or negative, congregations feel like they are treading water waiting for their next spiritual leader. Seeking a new pastor can both be a time of anxiety and hope. In recent times, many congregations have engaged the services of an interim pastor to both provide them guidance and some continuity while they search. This book offers a creative possibility for how the congregation can make use of this transition time to encourage their next chapter of ministry to be strong and healthy. The interim pastor is in a better position than almost anyone else to guide them in exploring that possibility. The ministry is a stressful calling that challenges a pastor's health—physical, emotional, financial, spiritual, family, and vocational— and, ironically, the better and more compassionate a pastor is, the bigger the challenge. Because an interim pastor is not advocating for him or herself, s/he is in a better position than anyone to help the congregation both understand and be supportive of good ministry. This book is designed to assist an interim in leaving the congregation with an intentional plan for a healthy partnership with their new pastor. It offers specific steps that an interim can take to educate the congregation about the stresses and challenge of ministry. The book then provides a design to enable the leadership to plan for a healthier approach to working with the new pastor. This is one of three volumes that are part of the series supporting the thesis that Healthy Clergy Make Healthy Congregations [HCMHC]. Each volume is designed to support clergy in a way that nurtures the spiritual health of the whole congregation. They are offered in the firm belief that God has called people together in congregations and called individuals to the ordained ministry in those congregations. All three volumes are available on Amazon.com. Those who care about the church are invited to go to the author's Web site www.smccutchan.com to view these and other resources designed to support the church.

In this world, dealing with change is not optional. People face change everyday. Despite the many jokes about "change and the church", the local church is not immune from change. When that change occurs because of the departure of the senior pastor, the potential impact is immense. This thesis examines Intentional Interim Ministry as a valid process for churches within the Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches during a pastoral transition period. Chapter One looks at Scriptural examples of God using change to bring His people through periods of transition into a transformed state. Chapter Two examines the history of Intentional Interim Ministry. This will include the identification of a variety of denominations that have embraced intentional interim ministry. To help understand the process of transition practiced within the Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches, a survey was conducted among church clerks throughout the Atlantic Provinces. To help understand how some churches approached pastoral transitional periods through a process of intentional interim ministry, interviews were conducted with seventeen pastors who have had intentional interim experience. Chapter Three will examine the potential impact that the end of a pastoral relationship can have on a congregation. This chapter will also examine seven common scenarios where a church should consider following an intentional interim process between pastors. Finally, this chapter will discuss some of the common resistance within churches to intentional interim ministry. Chapter Four will focus on the intentional interim pastor, his or her qualifications, and five challenges the intentional interim pastor will face in every interim setting. ix Chapter Five will focus on the work of the local church through a pastoral transitional period. This will include: assessing the situation to determine if an intentional interim process is needed; securing the services of an intentional interim pastor; establishing the plans for an effective interim period; and drawing the interim period to a healthy conclusion. Chapter Six will focus on the role of the Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches in creating a process for churches within the Convention to first, understand the concept and value of intentional interim ministry, and second, to secure the services of pastors trained in the principles and practices of intentional interim ministry.
