Excerpt from The Interior of the Earth DID the Spirit of God move upon the face of the waters and create this eafth, as the Bible tells us? Or was it brought into its present condition from a molten liquidity, as some of our geologists tell us? Mm, In answering flux questions, I propose to consider some of the latest theories which contemporary literature has placed before the world; and as these theories embrace several subjects which, though belonging to one great system, are called by various names, I shall devote a chapter to each. Excerpt from A Journey to the Earth's Interior, or Have the Poles Really Been Discovered The Copernican system of astronomy was a step in advance of the Ptolemaic system just be cause it enabled scientists to discover many new facts about the solar system which the error of the old view had hidden from their gaze. My own theory adds to the valuable results gained by the Copernican System, not by subverting it - for I imagine that no sane person would now try to do that - but by accepting it fully, and adding to it a different theory of the evolution of the several planets from their nebulae, and from this new theory of evolution deducing cer tain presumptions about the interior of the earth. These presumptions I have supported by a wealth of facts discovered by the telescopic observations of astronomers of nebulae and one of our sister planets, Mars, and made by ex plorers of the most fascinating parts of our own planet - the polar regions. A Journey to the Interior of the Earth Jules Verne scientific specimens; and stones too, enough to rebuild entirely the house in Königstrasse, even with a handsome additional room, which would have suited me admirably. But on entering this study now I thought of none of all these wonders; my uncle alone filled my thoughts. He had thrown himself into a velvet easy-chair, and was grasping between his hands a book over which he bent, pondering with intense admiration. Excerpt from The Earth, Vol. 2: A Descriptive History of the Phenomena of the Life of the Globe; Continents On account of these partitions it is very difficult, or even impossible, to navigate the course of subterranean rivers to any considerable distance, even at the time the water is low. When it is high, the liquid mass, detained by the partitions, rises to a very high level in the large interior cavities, and often reaches the roof above. Some times when, through the clefts of the rocks, a communication exists between the cave and some hollow above, the surplus water from the subterranean streams makes its appearance there. Thus the Becca, which flows beneath the adjacent plateau of Trieste, does not always find space enough to flow freely in its lower channels, and Schmidl has seen it ascend in the chasms of Trebich to a height of 341 feet. Lit may be understood that the pressure of such a column of water often shatters enormous pieces of rock, and thus modifies the course bf underground streams.
