This book provides a cutting-edge analysis of the ways in which higher education institutions have become more international over the past two decades. Drawing upon a range of post-foundational spatial, network, and mobilities theories, the book shifts our thinking away from linear, binary, Western accounts of internationalization to understand the complex, multi-centered and contradictory ways in which internationalization processes have played out across a wide variety of higher education landscapes worldwide. The author explores transnational student, scholar, knowledge, program and provider mobilities; the production of mobile bodies, knowledges, and identities; the significance of place in internationalization; and the crucial role that global university rankings play in reshaping the spatial landscape of higher education.

Internationalisation of the contemporary university has become a pervasive and powerful development theme during the past three decades. In many countries, higher education is now a major export industry. The UK has longstanding experience of overseas student recruitment, international partnerships between universities and trans-national education. It has led the world in the development of the quality assurance of overseas activities. This collection of essays brings together articles published in the journal of the UK Association of University Administrators (AUA). Several of the pieces are members of AUA whilst others are by authors who work in other countries. Overall, in this volume, there is a practitioner focus that provides the reader with lessons learnt by those with experience of implementing policies to promote the internationalisation of higher education. We are interested both in how universities can manage the challenges that they face, and in how the experience of students can be enhanced by participation in internationalisation. Because the AUA has an enduring commitment to the professionalization of management and administration, readers of this anthology will find accessible, focussed and brief articles that are solution-oriented. This book was originally published as a special issue of Perspectives: Policy and Practise in Higher Education.

This volume offers an overview of the context of internationalisation in which plurilingualism becomes a strategic axis for universities and in which university language centres serve as the key instrument to implement this process. It focuses on three key areas in which language centres are working together with governments across Europe, namely: language policy and internationalisation; specific training for the university community; and language testing and accreditation. The contributors to this book are all policy makers, instructors or evaluators from university language centres involved in the internationalisation of their institutions through languages. They teach and evaluate not only ‘regular’ students, but students with very specific needs, such as lecturers delivering content courses in English, students in mobility programmes or administrative staff in contact with international students. The book also includes the presentation of the first national higher education language policy in Europe, developed by the Language Policy Commission of the Board of Rectors of Spanish Universities and endorsed by all public and private universities in Spain.

He aims to determine the extent of internationalisation of higher education in the Asia-Pacific region particularly in Australia, Singapore and Japan in terms of its determinants and impacts using a multi- and inter-disciplinary framework of analysis, through historical, political, geographical, economic, social, and cultural dimensions.Daquila examines three leading universities in the world as case studies to determine their internationalisation experiences and the extent of their competitiveness. These are the University of Melbourne, the National University of Singapore, and Kyoto University. He uses four indicators of competitiveness: governance and structure, demand conditions, factor conditions, and internationalisation strategies (using the following indicators of IHE: expansion, broadening/diversification, deepening and facilitation). This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in the internationalisation of higher education, its determinants and multiple perspectives, the competitiveness and internationalisation experiences and strategies of universities.

This book seeks to put together the voices, the diverse positions and views of policy makers, gatekeepers and actors involved in the internationalisation of higher education institutions in Malaysia higher education system. It begins with an exploration of the literature and then examines the critical issues faced on the ground by higher education institutions in Malaysia. Issues are identified and interpreted based on a survey as well as those obtained from interviews involving stakeholders and players from various academic backgrounds, administrative positions and practitioner experiences. The findings indicated that there are diverse and contested perspectives on the aims, challenges and complexities faced in internationalisation. Broadly, there seems to be general agreement that Malaysia has fairly clear policies on the internationalisation in higher education which emphasises the mobility of students with a focus on the recruitment of international students and academic staff. Increasingly the respondents agree that there are needs to be a shift to a more holistic view of internationalisation which is system wide including internationalisation at home, enhancing research and development, and the need for greater institutional autonomy. This book characterises the complex contexts and issues around internationalisation in the Malaysia higher education system including issues around access and equity, competition and/or collaboration, import oriented and/ or domestic internationalisation. It also aims to provide a theoretical, conceptual and empirical evidence based resources for more informed evidence based policy and practice for the internationalisation of higher education systems.
